I think there are a few different types of plugins that are equally valuable at the front page. Payed extension like Skalp and V-Ray does fit in there in my view due to their usefulness. However, I think they should be balanced by small free extensions helping in the workflow.
The modular architecture is central in SketchUp. Where other programs just overwhelm the user with their function bloat, SketchUp lets you pick the functionality you want, often for free. I think this should be reflected on the front page.
OK, so Extension Manager suddenly woke up today and reported 16 extensions to be updated. The funny thing is, Artisan was reported to be updated, latest version on EW is v1.3.1 and I have that version installed (licence direct from mind.sight.studios and not through EW).
Now, I prefer to download the extensions manually and then installing them, internet connections here can be flaky at times and I do not depend on having a connection (let alone a good one).
Previously I would have been able to see the list of newly updated extensions using a simple search preset which I cannot do any longer.
I have been able to update all the extensions through EM but now donāt have a separate local version of the extensions should I need it in future.
Is SketchUp / Extension Warehouse planning to make this search function functionality available again? It is much quicker / easier to see what is newly released (incl. updates) since EM only reports on what you have installed. Iāve ādiscoveredā a few extensions like this in the past that I never thought I needed / wanted.
From the user point of view:
Iām sure I could be wrong ⦠but donāt you think it would make sense for the search word āeneā to return a hit for every plugin from @eneroth3 ? You know, every plugin name is starting with Eneā¦
Would make sense to me. Especially as some people use Ene as a nickname in the forums.
The search algorithm appears to have been tweaked since launch. When i first launched Eneroth Scaled perspective² it didnāt show up in the search result for Eneroth Scaled perspective. Lets hope Eneroth starts showing up when searching for Ene too.
The site appears to show the publish date, not the update date. Not sure if it applies to all extensions or just extensions updated since EW2 launched.
Regarding user settings they are at the 3D Warehouse as both warehouse share the same back end somehow. Itās been brought up that this makes no sense to users that one and only Warehouse is responsible for shared content, and that one and the same user may want to use their business name and logo in the Extension Warehouse and personal user information in 3D Warehouse.,
Beside that, even you have āonlyā 4 extensions, why arenāt you in the āTopā developer groupā¦?
We need list of developers similar as a categories.
That Top list will be reworked. Itās currently working as EW1 did, which I think was only using number of extensions. Iām not sure any ātopā lists with fixed constraints are that valuable. Iād like to see a number of factors used which will pull in wider ranges and rotate the lists on the front page.
@ChrisFullmer Can you please more specific about the deadline?
Iām very frustrated too. (Including similar annoying pop-ups in 3D Warehouse.)
Personally, I click on something because I want to access the information. Deliberately. Indeed.
Iām really curious what was your original intention with this ātrickyā pop-up?
If I leave, canāt I come back? Or what? @tt_su ?
After several tests all the plugins said incompatibes are on the contrary compatible with SketchUp 2020!
Many users of SketchUp 2020 will no longer install any plugins because of this window which will once again penalize extension developers.
Are you going to check all the plugins to classify them as compatible?
Do developers need to re-publish their extensions after each update to SketchUp?
How long will it take you to classify the extensions as compatible?
I draw your attention to this subject because I believe that the compatibility between SketchUp and the extensions should be defined by the developers without going through a new submission.
In fact it is very likely that extensions from an older SketchUp versions work in a newer one (but not vice-versa) because usually features are added to the SketchUp API and rarely ever removed. Another important factor is that the Ruby version can be changed, which is more likely to break compatibility (if old syntax or libraries are deprecated).
In order to be able to truely say āit is compatibleā one needs to know the source code and which SketchUp API or Ruby functions it uses. And one needs to run the complete automated test suite, or alternatively manually test whether all features work as in the extensionās specification. This is something that users cannot do themselves. And not all developers have the time to constantly update version numbers in Extension Warehouse.
The reason for the message still holds. But maybe the message can be reworded to be less threatening.
I agree that checking compatible version checkboxes should be done by editing extension metadata, not by having a new submission and review. And as far as I remember, I heard a big āyesssā from SketchUp team members as well.
