[Undet for sketch up] texturing point cloud to surface

Hi.
I’m trying to texturing scanned point cloud to surface of model that I made.

I already scanned space by blk360 and export it to point cloud .ipcp file by undet indxer. After then, I made walls, floor and obstacle along point cloud by sketch up. Now, I want to texturing these point cloud to surface of the obstacle that I made.
I followed Undet for SketchUp | How to apply a texture from point clouds this youtube video.
Unlike the video, in my case, when I change my clipping box after click texturing button texture removed from surface.
Is there anybody can give advise about this solution please?
I’d like to texturing(importing) point cloud to surface that I made at sketch up.

It doesn’t look as though the surface in your point cloud clipping box matches any surface in your model. They need to be on the same plane for texturing to work.

Hi reetie .

First of all, thank you so much for your helpful advice on my question.

Following your guidance, I was able to successfully texture the surfaces using the sample point cloud data provided with Undet for SketchUp (point cloud file that named ‘small chapel data’ uploaded in hompage of undet for sketch up).
Encouraged by this, I tried to apply the same process to my own point cloud data, which I scanned using a BLK360 3D scanner from Leica. I exported the scan as an .e57 file and converted it to an .ipcp file.
However, unfortunately, I wasn’t able to apply the texture to the surfaces in this case just like my the first problem.

If you have any insights or suggestions about this issue, I’d really appreciate your help.

All the best,
David127

It is doable with scan essentials beta, it also costs less than what undet costs, and icludes V-Ray, Revit importer and more features and tools to be released in the near future.

Hi David.

Can you share your point cloud file via OneDrive or DropBox or similar?

Hi Kevin

This is my sampled point cloud data .e57 file that scanned by my BLK360 by Leica.
Please let me know if there are any problem to my .e57 file for texturing at Undet.

Sincerely.
David.

Hi David,

I downloaded your 2GB point cloud file and created a quick video showing the steps I took with it after dropping it onto my desktop. I hope you find it helpful.

Does Scan Essentials now support mesh creation? For my workflow, easily generating precise meshes from any surface or elevation is essential, but when I last used SE, that feature was missing.

It’s not released yet, but it will have this feature. I’m not sure who’s you can talk to so you can join the sketchup labs program and test new features that are going to be added to sketchup.

Hi Kevin,
First of all, sorry for the late reply.

Thanks to your YouTube video, I was finally able to texture point cloud data in SketchUp.
I really appreciate your kind and helpful guidance.

Encouraged by that success, I scanned another space using my 3D scanner and tried to apply the same texturing method.
However, this time, I wasn’t able to get the texturing to work.

If you have any ideas about common mistakes that Undet beginners tend to make or if there are any specific requirements or criteria regarding point cloud density for successful texturing, I’d be very grateful if you could share them.

Thanks again for all your help!

Best regards,
David

If you share your latest Point Cloud I will have a look at it for you.

There are no special Point Cloud requirements for Undet as long as the format is supported and your previous e57 file was fine. I have to say there wasn’t a lot of detail within it for such a large file (2GB) but that may be down to your scanner or the way you processed the scan?

I would encourage you to watch this comprehensive video created by Undet. The video is over 90 minutes in length and well worth watching all the way through. The section explaining how texturing works starts around 34:40

Best of luck :+1:

Hi francis thid is David.

While watching your video, I got some questions.
You mean you you made that sketchup textured file by scan essential beta version not by undet for sketchup?

And also, I’d like to ask you how to remove noise of point cloud when texturing it. Because in my case, there are some noise such like less scanned part underneath the 3D scanner which textured surface unclearly and speckled.

Yes, I don’t have undet,

I don’t know how to do it on Undet, on scan essentialls you can increase the resolution.

But you should keep using Undet if you need it, cause I don’t know when will the update of scan essentials will be released.

Thank you for your reply.
How can I get scan essential beta version? I’d like to follow your method.

@TedVitale_SU can probably invite you to the SketchUp labs program.

Can I contact Ted Vitale by sketchup forum message for get scan essential beta version?

You can, but you must commit to the program, that means trying the new features and tools that are being tested, not only scan essentials, then you have to submit your experience.
