Topography cut

Hello

Two questions:

  1. I used Aaron’s excellent video, ‘How to use the Drape tool on a landscape plan - Skill Builder’ to get to a certain point in my model. Here is a link to his video:

In my model I’m trying to clean up the lower regions where I extruded the topo from flatwork down through the topo terrain.

I’m would like to create a clean cut or section of soil (slice) BELOW all my modeling work such as in this image:

Would anyone have an elegant method to do this?

Here is screen shot of my model. File was too big to upload:

  1. Could someone recommend a rendering software, either free or low-cost, to improve the look of my model? Or even a preferred native style, method or filter that might help to improve the cartoon-like appearance of SU colors?

Thanks

Try Eneroth’s Terrain Volume extension.

Example:

What’s your budget? Thea Render is 280 USD annually. Podium is 249.00.

For using only Native Styles, the thing I like to do with is adjust the line edge color to a lighter color like ‘Steel’. And set the Profiles to ‘1’ and turn on. Then adjust the Shadows ‘light/dark’ a bit while making sure ‘Use sun for shading’ is turned on.

Lastly, if you have Photoshop, you could export your scenes and do some quick post processing. See our Campus Course for more info if you’re interested in that route. Happy to answer any questions regarding the course materials.

Thanks for all great info. Will take a look in the morning.

Thanks

Daniel

Hello Eric

Thanks again for all the great information.

In the current state of my model I’m having issues converting my terrain using Enroth’s Terrain Volume ext.

Any chance you might have a moment to look at it? I can’t get it to convert to a mass. I suspect it’s all the dirty work below grade or model above grade that is causing the issue. Also, I’ve been in rush to get this back to my customer and my tags are a bit sloppy.

Here is a compressed file if you have a moment to look at?

Thanks

Thank you for this light reading assignment.

Looks good. I added contours to the slope using Tig’s Contour Maker Extension - I also adjusted the edge and shadows settings to help it read. Materials can be a deal breaker for some models. Don’t use materials from the default browser and really spend some time thinking about color, scale, orientation, complimentary/contrasts, etc. Cheers.
*Edit: and to pick up what @mihai.s started saying…you should be working in groups and components. That was the problem with Terrain Volume Extension…just group the terrain only. Then run the extension and it should be fine.

how did you get the colored pencil look in your materials? love that look

Specific to Mac OSX…The colors/materials browser has always worked differently than windows…some people like and others do not but not much SketchUp can do about it.
