Hello,
I was working on a layout file and manually saved it. A backup file was created in the same folder. Now, neither the main file nor the backup will open.
When I try to open the file, the program starts to load and then closes itself before the file opens. Other files I’ve tried to open are working normally. I’ve also tried opening my file on different computers, and the same issue occurs.
I’ve lost a day’s worth of work and would really appreciate any help. Has anyone else experienced this
Can you share the file and we can try to fix.
You can also search the forums on how to repair files.
thank you i will search. you can download the file from here.
Your LayOut file opens just fine in LayOut 2025. Are you using a cr acked version of SketchUp/LayOut 2020?
I do notice a few issues with the SketchUp model file. Incorrect tag usage, a few unused components and materials but especially some excessively large materials.
I reduced the materials to make them a reasonable size which reduced the .skp file by 74% which also makes the LayOut file perform better.
You’ll see better performance if you upgrade to the current version of SketchUp and LayOut.
thank you, I am using a purchased version of 2020. that’s why i am stuck in older version.
Could you save as the file and share it with me? Thank you so much
Your file does crash LayOut 2020. Even saving out a new file as a 2020 version does not open in LayOut 2020. It does open in LayOut 2021.
Can you click my avatar, and send me a message, with your license details? If you are lucky, it may be that you’re entitled to the 2021 version, and that would solve the problem.
I was going to share the cleaned up version with you but seeing @colin’s remarks, there appears to be no point.
It would be more work, which I could do if you like, but taking a 2020 version of the cleaned up SKP, and relinking it to the LayOut document, then saving that as a 2020 LayOut file, would be worth trying.
I cleaned up in 2025 and then relinked theSKP file in LO before saving back to 2020..
Colin, are you asking for the .skp file I cleaned up?
Hmm, the SKP inside the 2020 LayOut file may still be a 2025 SKP. Ideally you would open the cleaned up SKP in 2023, and save it as 2020, then relink that into the LayOut document.
I’m curious now, and may do a test. Does saving a 2025 LayOut file with a 2025 SKP in it, do a downsave to 2020 of the SKP?
Barry shared with me a saved as file and it still doesn’t open. You are right! i am pretty sure i am not entitled to the 2021 version but i will have a trial version just to export a pdf.
I guess I don’t know. I would have assumed the SKP file would be saved as the same version as the LO file when the LO file is saved back.
Ah, well …
If I could have the cleaned up SKP, I could do the test to see if it still crashes LayOut 2020.
I’ll send it to you.
See a couple of things that could be problematic in the References list. First, there are a number of images that were copied and pasted into the LayOut file. In earlier versions of LayOut they wouldn’t be embedded by default and would instead point to a temporary folder which is guaranteed to create issues.
There’s also a .skp reference (highlighted) which Purge won’t remove but I can’t find where it is used on any page in the document.
Update: I download sketchup 2025 trial for 7 days to continue my work and don’t lose my file. The program works perfectly. I noticed that was using a sketchup object that i had copied-pasted from sketchup to layout and also copy paste from an other layout file. These object was creating the glitch to the layout 2020. (The object was the one you higllighted DaveR) When i deleted it and saved as in 2020 i was able to open again my file in 2020 layout.
My conclusion is simplier files and dont copy paste from one layout to another.
Thanks everyone for your help.
And don’t copy from SketchUp and paste into LayOut.
So I guess it’s time to update your subscription to 2025 so you can keep working.
