Sketchup files taking far too long to open

Recently I upgraded my computer for work and was pleasantly surprised at how well the computer would load SKP files. For context I have years of file saved on a business Google Drive. This is how all of my files are stored.

Lately my laptop has been taking several minutes to load a single SKP no matter the detail. Some of the files are extremely small and basic yet still take a matter of minutes to load. Others within my company utilizing laptops that are generally spec’d lower than my laptop by a significant amount have no issues loading the files.

What would cause all files lately to change the speed at which they load? I have seen other topics about slow files but the fixes and/or conversations are around simplifying and purging the models. I do not believe this is my issue given the nature of when the issue started and my coworkers loading the exact same files on older laptops.

Storing files on Google Drive is probably unsafe. Most of the people posting damaged files on the forum have been opening files directly from online storage.

You can test your file opening times by copying your files from Google to your harddrive and comparing the times. Of course, the most common reason for longer file loading times is that their size has bloated.

I tested opening some big files on sketchup 2025 and 2026, the latest version is up to 50% faster than sketchup 2025, it depends on the file obviously, but in general it’s a lot faster.
