SketchUp 2025 has stopped recovering files, despite Auto-Save settings

Hi all,

I’ve noticed lately that SketchUp will sometimes crash - more frequently in 2025 Pro than previous versions - and has stopped recovering the files. It is somewhat situational, but it’s totally random and seems to crash when the autosave rainbow wheel occurs - but only sometimes. I’m not sure if it’s actually the auto-save, but occasionally the little windows thinking wheel appears and that’s when the random crash occurs. It seems most frequent when I’m drawing and then click the endpoint.

Has anyone else had issues with this? SketchUp Pro 2025, installed as Admin but not necessarily running as Admin.

Thanks.

The recovery files are in alphabetical order. An Untitled auto save file might be a long way down the list. Carefully scroll downwards, and see if the file you’re expecting is there.

Or, open the last saved file, and if there is a recovery file you should see a dialog giving you the option to open the recovery file.

the dialogue is what’s not appearing. Previously I could open the file again, see the dialogue and it would open a read only version of the file from the recent auto-save. Usually it was 5-20 minutes worth of work lost. However, now, the dialogue is not appearing and the files are opening as if they were never edited. I lost about 2 hours worth of work earlier today when I posted, because there’s no skb file or recovery dialogue.

The recovery dialog only shows if auto save files are being saved. The SKB is the backup file, which is a copy of the previous save.

The SKB should be in the same folder as the SKP. The auto save files are stored here:

%LocalAppData%\SketchUp\SketchUp 2025\SketchUp\working\

You could look there with File Explorer, to see if the auto save files are being created ok.

Ah ok that seems to have worked. For a second there it was giving me an IT error about my user profile (I’m on a managed PC through work).

If the files are being created, is there a reason why the recovery dialogue would not appear?

Only if SketchUp had trouble reading the files, even though it apparently was able to write them. Our PCs are IT managed as well, and I seem to get recovery files ok.

For now, unless IT have thoughts, you could keep a shortcut handy to that folder, and you can manually drag the recovery file to Documents, or wherever you save your models, and do your own form of getting back the lost work.
