Shape Style stopped working in one file

Hi all, for some reason pattern fill/fill/stroke in Layout has stopped working in my file. All layers are turned on and nothing is hidden behind another. When I open a new file the shape styles work appropriately. I tried toggling draft mode on/off to no avail. Any advice?

Can you share the LO file sso we can see what you are working with. Tell us what you are trying to modify with Shape Style, too.

hi @DaveR thank you; what’s the best way to share the LO file? When I quit layout and restart the shape style functions normally but when I use the dropper to sample another fill it infects the tool and the tool stops functioning again…

It’s probably too large to upload directly to the forum so upload to DropBox or WeTransfer and share the link.

FYI in my finder window the layout file has an iCloud icon (a cloud) with an exclamation mark on it. This can indicate the file is corrupt. However if I save a copy of the file the problem persists when using the shape tools again

You really should not be working on files saved directly to iCloud or any other cloud location. This has been a source of problems for many users. I’ll see what I can see in your file.

hi Dave the file is saved locally and I work from it locally; iCloud just automatically backs it up.

Which shape are you sampling and which shape are you trying to apply the change to?

Maybe. I’ve seen cases where it looks like the file is saved locally but really isn’t.

I am trying to sample the plaster hatch/pattern and create a polygon with no stroke/fill

was working normally for last few days until last hour

So like this?

So there’ve been no changes in LayOut for weeks. How about quitting SketchUp and LayOut and doing a power-off reboot. Does that change anything?

hi Dave can you try creating a polygonal shape and see what happens?

So more than four sides?

There’s a puzzle for @adam. when I sample off a polygon with edges turned on AND a pattern, I get the pattern when I apply the style to another polygon. After I sample from your rectangle as I did in the previous post, the polygon disappears.

pattern

dave does your shape tool stop working more fundamentally? after i sample that pattern i can’t draw lines or anything in the file.

BTW you were right; the files were on iCloud. I moved them to a local folder in my home directory and relinked all the files, restarted the computer, etc. Problem still persists

No. That I’m not seeing. I can still set the shape style while I have a drawing tool active and I can edit a shape by selecting it and editing the style.

On thing I noticed is that you have the stroke color set to be transparent and turned off. If I set the stroke color to be black and just turn off the stroke, the sampling and applying style to the polygons works fine.

I think it’s not right but then again, there’s probably no reason to make the stoke transparent AND turn it off.

thanks @DaveR the weird thing is when i clicked on the objects the stroke was turned on…i didn’t realize that both the “stroke” button and the color next to it toggle

…however it’s still strange that even with an object selected and the pattern toggle turned on the pattern wouldn’t appear.

Thanks again for all your help

The UI is more clear on Windows, I think. Yes, Fill, Pattern, and Stroke can be toggled on or or with the button (label) in Shape Style. This is what I see with one of your shapes selected.

It’s very clear that Fill and Stroke are turned off and Pattern is turned on. The color swatch for Stroke is showing the color set to blacvk but with opacity at 0.

When you click on the color swatch to edit it, Stroke gets turned on and you can see the opacity in the Colors panel.

I wonder if things would work better for you if you leave the Stroke color set to opaque black and just turn it off.

I edited the rectangle with fill as you can see at the beginning here so that the Stoke is black with full opacity but just turned off. Applying that style to the polygon then works as expected.

And you’re welcome.

that worked thanks Dave!
