Same SketchUp you love, a new way to buy

And whoever shouts louder wins?

It must be my mind toying with me, but I was sure that one could previously activate (admittedly a good couple of years ago) and work without the need for internet services.

M+S is active. Explain the offline activation thing a little clearer if you don’t mind. I keep multiple backups of my software and serials, so if my machine goes belly-up I am able to recover.

He is quoting the price of Revit LT. It is suitable for smaller projects.

I agree with the first paragraph, but lets not forget that SU is owned by Trimble, which a multinational company with plenty of money. If this is Trimble squeezing the good folk of SU then what will inevitably happen is Trimble will pull the plug on SU after making it unpopular with the types of customers that are the majority (numerically, not necessarily financially) of SU users. I’m afraid I will be using my perpetual licence to do basic sketch schemes for clients’ and going elsewhere for construction documentation, probably ArchiCad that you can rent out on a month by month basis, which is ideal for a small practice with a limited budget and cash flow.

it pinged the server upon entering the license info, then it would sent a SketchUp.lic file back. The information stored on the server side being the Username of account and the Mac Address. (coded)
Thats why you can go offline after that. This is called the classic licensing and still works.

That info would be needed (User name and Mac Address) to generate it by hand ( You sent info, and support sends the offline license in return) You need to save it somewhere on your machine.

A lot of hassle for something that is done automatically.

Hmmm, interesting. I was thinking democracy rather that dictatorship. If the majority of your customer base is telling you what they want then you go in the opposite direction people will vote with their feet. I am. Bye bye Trimble/SU no subs from me.

Bang on Medeek. That writing on the wall should have been scrubbed off and Trimble Su should have kept up what made them so attractive in the first place.

Hmm as usual I would say. I started with SketchUp as a pro user more than 13 years ago. In the last few years it became more and more visible that Trimble’s SketchUp becomes excatly the opposite of what is was inteded to be.
It’s always the same and we saw it with Apple, with Google and with many more: From Paulus to Saulus!
Now we are at a stage where I have to think about to leave SketchUp.

This is absolutely the key point. I’m in the same boat as you. Cash flow is irregular for a small practice and owning allows access without any additional fee up front reducing immediate overheads. Lets hope Trimble SU are reading and back off.

What if the company closes and you can no longer access the orig software? I mean anything can happen, honestly.

Anyway… back to work

Check out Graphsoft ArchiCad. I use that as well as SU. Well, did will be more accurate when I get back into teaching after lockdown. SU is not going to figure other than very basic sketch scheme use. Rubbish because I really liked using SU. All the best for when you get back.

Yes, it is my main workhorse today. It costs only 6000€+VAT + 960€/yr+VAT maintenance. Luckily I don’t have to pay. You can also rent it at 3200€/yr+VAT.

Comparing a BIM package with SketchUp is somewhat absurd. A BIM package will save a 10+ person office the work of 1-2 assisting persons that would in a CAD/SketchUp workflow create and maintain all the schedules ā€œby handā€. In a smaller firm with smaller projects it takes a smaller part of the workload.

I could only find one UK reseller (apart from Graphisoft). There was no price for rental but the monthly subscription is £119+VAT !

I’m fortunate (is that the best was to describe it?) that my workflow is such that I do not have serious problems with SU and LO.

What is essentially a price hike for me is still the best £ option for me.

At this stage of my life, I don’t want to learn a new program. Plus, I don’t want to muck around with a trial version. The main appeal of SketchUp for me was Make 2017 to use as a teaching tool. My students are hobbyist woodworkers, and I don’t think it’s cricket to have them pay for software and pay for my class.

This is pretty insulting.
Really bad and rude to ear from someone which sells and is supposed to ā€œrepresentā€ sketchup IMHO.
That said, I can see the only two users which are not ranting about this are you and the other guy selling sketchup.
How cool is that. :relieved:
