Preferences > File Locations > Templates

The message below is on startup of SU 2025

Template location path change option button is grayed out. I exported from the screen shown below and then opened the DAT file and all paths except Templates was listed. AND as I’m typing this (what if I edit the DAT file) add the Template location string to end of file, save and import. My edit shows up and a restart of SU returns NO file path error message.

I still would like to know if Template File location is grayed out for anyone else

And did you know there is an options tied to the DAT import. And only Shortcuts and File Locations are included in the Preferences.dat file.

Looks like SharedPreferences.json & Preferences.dat are a team when it comes to preferences. But how did SU find my Templates with that invalid path?

It should be grayed out for everyone. It’s grayed out because it’s not supposed to be changed. It would have been better if they hadn’t included the icon for editing that location.

OK, curious how SU found my templates with that invalid path.

Updated my OP

The path shown with the red is the correct path for templates for SU2025

That should be hard coded and cannot be changed so SketchUp should find it with no problem. That’s actually the point of it being a unchangeable.

This feature has been around for at least two decades. More than that since it’s available in SketchUp version 3.

When you installed SketchUp did you right click on the downloaded installer and choose Run as administrator?

What happens if you click the “Open folder” icon for the invalid path?

Have you navigated into the %AppData% path and verified that the "Templates" folder exists or not?

It can be changed, I just proved it by adding the template file path to my exported Preferences.dat file then imported that dat file, path updated. On second export though NO template file path carries over, which makes sense if isn’t supposed to be changed

It’s not supposed to be changed.

Yes. That’s right.

To late to check open folder button, already fixed it, yes the template path exists

 gotcha

Because the export dat function is not coded to export the "Templates" filepath.

The "Templates" filepath is currently not supposed to be changed because of other features that have yet to be given agility of file location. (Meaning the Welcome window interface and the “File > New from Template…” command interface, to name a few.)

The users have long requested that the "Templates"filepath be editable. Think about a company with many seats where they want all the users to be using the same templates.
