Orbit around selection

The space mouse is cool but can’t overcome a dreadfully inappropriate default rotation point.

Working with point clouds requires a lot of true 3D navigation.
Most of it is orbiting a small clump of dots trying to line up the view so your brain can understand what it’s seeing.
It looks like mush 95% of the time until you have it tilted just the right way.
It seriously takes longer to get the right view than creating the object.

It’s tough enough as it is without all your careful tweaking of the view evaporating on a stray click.

As I said the authors warn you as soon as you try to import a cloud.
They offer to move the cloud to 0,0,0 so you can still orbit.
If you decline and prefer your clouds to remain in their correct positions you will be getting erratic orbiting.

I am assuming they would fix it if they could, rather than apologise for it on each import.

I will investigate the Orbit issue for point clouds far from the SketchUp origin.

Best,

JH

It’s sounds to me that the problem is the point cloud not affecting the model bounds and what is considered the model center, not where the origin is.

If I edit my scans position to 0,0,0 before import the problem disappears.

For information, moving the point cloud to 0,0,0 may prevent a SketchUp model to flicker (when the point cloud is thousands of km away from the origin - it is not your case).
It is normally not related to the navigation. I am investigating your issue.

Best,

Jacques
