Aw, shucks. Thank you for the very nice compliment.
Maybe you could find a hypnotist to wipe your memory and you could start over. Of course you’d probably end up using only components in your models. I had to include that before someone else did.

Hi Dave,
Quick question…which template do you recommend I use - plan view or architectural?
Thanks
Ilana
Hi Ilana,
I would suggest the Architectural template to start with. Eventually you’ll probably want to create your own template but the Architectural template is a good place to start.
Thanks!!!
Hi Dave,
I have another quick question. Do I make the walls a group as well as a layer?
Thanks
Ilana
Hi Ilana,
You make the walls a group and you give them a tag. Remember, no layers in SketchUp.
Tags are given to, or put on, groups and components primarily to control visibility in scenes. They can also be used to display dashes but I think that’s a thing to save for later.
Great thanks, I think it’s starting to come together now. Just watching some videos on Layout and should get to design the floor plan soon.
Thanks so much for all your help!! I couldn’t have done it without you!!
Hi Dave,
Me again, should I first extrude the wall before I save the group and tag? Or doesn’t it make a difference?
You can do it in either order. Draw the outline of the walls, select the geometry, create the group. When you are ready to make them 3D you will need to open the group for editing first. Or you can wait until the walls are 3D and then make the group. Or, you can even choose to make a group first, then draw the outline of the walls and extrude to height. Whichever way you do it, make sure you are giving the tag to the group and not the edges and faces inside it.
Maybe I’m misunderstanding something here. The primary requirement at the moment is to add colour to individual elements of the model. As much as you do need to learn some fundamentals about SU and everyone has already assisted quite nicely in this regard, why not simply paint each surface?
You don’t need to select them before painting. So you have a single click selection (one surface or line), a double click selection (all lines and surfaces on a plane that are connected) and a triple click selection (all lines and surfaces on all planes that are connected) in SU. If nothing is selected, then SU assumes you will be painting a single surface within a defined polyline. (e.g. if your 2D wall is correctly enclosed by lines, then the plane or surface within those line can still be painted independently from the other surfaces.)
Yes, you started without the fundamentals but you should be able to salvage this without starting from scratch.
Hi Dave,
I’m almost done with my assignment, just putting the finishing touches on the title block. Where can I get the KEY symbols and North compass symbol or should I create those myself on Power Point?
Thanks
Ilana
Normally those things would be added in LayOut. There are scarpbook items already included for some of that stuff. You might need to make some of your own key symbols but there are some additional scrapbooks you could add to LayOut such as the one in the first post in this thread on Sketchucation.
One of the native scrapbook pages showing a north symbol

Thanks!
I’m stuck again! I didn’t want to use Layout because I’m more familiar with PowerPoint but when I export the sketchup floorplan as a jpeg file and then insert it onto my A3 page in PP and crop it, it doesn’t fit the page when I scale it to 1:50. It’s too big. Any advice?
Is it possible that your plan is too big to fit on the page at 1:50?
