Modifying stl from thingiverse

I am a newbie to 3d printing and to sketchup and I am trying to modify an stl from thingiverse. This is the thing Flashlight bike holder by Carletto73 - Thingiverse

What I want to do is to modify the modify the end that is supposed to go around the bike handlebars to be flat so I can sandwich a strap in there instead.

The closest I have come is to fill the hole with a cylinder and cut it but I haven’t been able to get that to work completely.

If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be great.

That’s really hard to visualize. Please provide some sort of illustration or picture, or refine your description.

I’m not entirely sure I understand your problem.
So i filled the hole like you, but left the gap. I also deleted the faces inside so that it remained a solid. However this is a waste of plastic and probably better to redesign. But hopefully this can get you in the right direction.

Yes that is what I was thinking thanks! can you give a summary of how you did it? I am trying to learn how to use sketchup more.

DaveD sent me this one. Thanks Dave!

The basic steps are:

  • delete the unwanted part and keep the holes and the rounded edge
  • model one half of the new part with the line and pushpull tool
  • mirror the new part, clean up unneded edges
  • make a component/group and check for solid one
