Minimal effective "maximum" resolution for SketchUp textures/materials?

I could use some clarification on this one. For the longest time (like up to SU ver 6), I had heard that 1024x1024 pixels was the “maximum” supported resolution for some technical reason that I can’t recall… but then I thought when “Use maximum texture size” was introduced, SketchUp would sorta cheat the system and “support” 2048x2048. And for some other vague reason I thought I heard that even though it actually “supports” higher, SU would resample down to one resolution or another.

I typically tell people 2048 x 2048 is the minimal effective “maximum” resolution but I always need to add “but I am not quite sure.” Tech-savvy SketchUppers, what is the right way to explain this?
