GOOD AFTERNOON SKETCHUP FAMILY, AFTER SKETCHUP UPDATE 2026.1, WHICH I UPDATED ON MY DESKTOP, I AM NO LONGER ABLE OPEN MY LAYOUT FILES BOTH FROM CLOUD OR LOCAL DRIVES. HOWEVER, I HAVE NOT UPDATED THE PROGRAM ON MY LAPTOP AND EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING FINE.
I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIND A WORK AROUND FOR 8 HOURS NOW AND THERE IS NO OPTION TO REVERT BACK TO PREVIOUS VERSION.
ATTACHED IS A REDUCED MODEL THAT I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON. I HAVE TRIED TO ZIP AND UNZIP FILES BUT GETTING NO LOVE ON MY DESKTOP. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYONE ELSE IS HAVING THIS ISSUE AND IF YOU HAVE A FIX. THANK YOU!
If larger than 16 Mb, upload the file to DropBox or similar and share the link. Don’t try stripping a file down because you might wind up removing what is causing the problem.
BTW, when you installed SketchUp did you do so correctly? That requires right clicking on the downloaded installer and selecting Run as administrator.
And to answer your question, no. I did not run as administrator. I cannot recall that Ive ever had to do that during an update but i will take every bit of advice that i can get!
Something is indeed corrupted in the LayOut file. I tried replacing the SketchUP file with the one you shared but that didn’t work. I did do the same cleanup as on the earlier file.
There are several other .skp file references in the LayOut file. Are any of them important to this project?
Maybe @adam can determine what is preventing the LayOut file from behaving.
As for the Run as administrator, you should do that to ensure SketchUp is installed correctly. Close SketchUp and LayOut, find the installer, right click on it, choose Run as administrator, and then the Repair option.
Like i said,I updated sketchup on my on my desktop yesterday and haven’t been able to open either local or cloud Layout files only, but on my laptop which I haven’t updated, everything works just fine.
I tried comparing the files after extracting the Layout file on both computers and they seem identical which leads to believe a reference file or some path is not working correctly after the update.
Anyway, I really do appreciate your help! If anything comes to mind, I will be waiting on your reply. Your responses to forums have gotten me out of a lot of trouble, but this one i just cannot figure out.
yes, after reading for 9 hours today reading forum discussions, I will migrate my files locally and it will remain that way.
Ideally it would be fantastic to resolve this issue, but I’m slowly but surely leaning on having to redo all the work. Still confused why local files on my desktop don’t open in Layout either but hopefully Adam will be able to help answer.
again, thank you so much for your help. If and when im in Minnesota, the beers on me!
@jsullivan714 I’ve looked at your LayOut file and it does seem to be related to two table file references that show up like this for me in Document Setup > References:
These seem to be somewhat invalid table file references - they don’t point to an external file, and they have default file names for internal references that don’t actually exist within the ref/ subfolder of the layout file. in the references.xml, they look like this:
The tables that are using these table file references are all on your COVER page. In 2026.0, you should be able to context click on those three tables and select “Unlink Table Viewport”, then purge your file references and save. Note that you seem to have each of the three tables inside a group for some reason, so you will need to go into the group before you can context click on the table. After saving, this file should open in 2026.1.
thank you so much for your detective work! i will try modifying on my laptop and hopefully the changes will reflect on my desktop and allow the file to open again. stay tuned!
I have the same problem, opening Layout file. I have the latest Sketchup 2026-1. I decided to install 2025 too, it opened it the first time. But the second time it says I can’t open it… And since then I can’t open it with either version. I hope this is just a bug and it can be fixed. I’m not sure if it can be from DropBox…
