I just tested the jpg import on SU2017 on my computer and had no problem.
What kind of an update? Of Windows? Microsoft sent out an update a week or so back that screwed up a bunch of programs including SketchUp. Perhaps that has something to do with the issue you’re seeing. Look at this thread: Slow selection tool (SketchUp 2017) - #2 by DaveR
