Is it illegal to use the wall and door models in the 3D warehouse as the backdrop for a comic, with my own coloring and decorations? I misunderstood before that it was legal to use them because someone else had published the information. When I tried to contact them to ask for permission or to pay for the rights to use them commercially, they didn’t seem to leave any way. I can only comment, or should I go back and edit my work without using those models?
No one here can give you legal advice. You should get real legal counsel to interpret the 3D Warehouse Terms of Use. In general, if you have a current paid subscription to SketchUp you can use it for commercial work and that includes content from the 3D Warehouse.
Thank you. I tried to contact the program staff in my country. They gave me different answers, which made me very uncomfortable. It looks so difficult to use that I think it would be safer to buy models from 3D ACON. They should do the same as Clip Studio’s ASSET, where if users want to sell or give away, they can select and upload models in it under the same agreement. But in 3D warehouse, there is no option for commercial use. And the agreement is really unclear. And I’m sure many people are confused like me. And it seems that the company does not have any clear answers. If it is like this, they should specify in the terms that you cannot use it for any commercial use in art.
The wording is determined by Trimble’s legal service and intended to cover as many situations as possible. As I said, if it’s not clear to you then you should find a lawyer in your country to give you guidance.
You do have a legal SketchUp subscription, right?
Yes, I subscribed monthly on my iPad because I work on it a lot and am switching to the annual subscription on my computer after upgrading.
Then you probably don’t have anything to worry about. Architects and other professionals frequently use content from the 3D Warehouse in their SketchUp models and as a rule they aren’t working for free. As far as I can see you should be able to use the content, too. But I’m not a lawyer; I don’t even play one on TV.
