Importing a PDF Plan into Sketchup

Hi All

I am trying to import a pdf plan to sketchup and when I go to import the document it is not showing to attach it.

In the past I would convert PDF to DWG however saw the below guidelines on HowtoSketchup:

Step-by-Step Guide to Importing PDFs in SketchUp

Let’s look at some methods for importing PDFs into SketchUp, depending on the version you’re using.

Method 1: Using SketchUp Pro’s Built-in Import Function

For users of SketchUp Pro (available on both Windows and macOS), there’s a built-in feature for importing PDF files directly into your project. Here’s how:

  1. Open Your Project: Start by opening the SketchUp file you’re working on.
  2. Navigate to Import Options: Go to File > Import, and select the PDF file type from the dropdown menu.
  3. Adjust Settings: Select import options to set the resolution and scaling as needed.
  4. Place the PDF: Click to position the imported PDF on your SketchUp model.
  5. Align and Scale the PDF: Use the Tape Measure or Scale tool to match the PDF dimensions to your model accurately.

The above is not working even though I have the PRO package.

Any advice?

Ginny

This is available on macOS.

File > Import
Select the file

Click into the model and place the PDF.

There is nothing to configure…

What version of SketchUp? Your profile says 2019. Are you still using that? Are you still using Mac?

What part of that isn’t working? What happens when you do try to import the PDF into SketchUp? Note that PDF import is only available on Mac and the PDF will come in as an image, not as vector line work as you would get with converting to dxf or dwg and importing that.

Hi

I am now using Windows so not MAC. I note also from others that it would only be available on MAC so not to worry.

I have reached out to the architect to send over a DWG version and I think this will cover what I need.

Thanks so much for your reply

Ginny

Ok and thanks so much for replying.

Appreciate it.

Please update your forum profile. As you can see that information is useful to us in giving you guidance when you have questions.

Another possibility with Windows is to open the pdf in Acrobat Reader then save the file as a jpg file that can then be imported in SketchUp.

However, the resolution might not be as good as a direct pdf import.

FWIW, if the PDF contains vector linework and you want a .dxf from it, you could use Inkscape to create that line work. Inkscape is a free application and is useful for a number of things.
