Important - Upcoming Ruby Update

Hello!

I hope you are all doing well.

I wanted to reach out with a quick heads-up regarding some upcoming changes in our technical pipeline for future SketchUp updates.

Every few major versions, we update our embedded Ruby version to stay on top of the latest fixes, performance improvements, and language features. In an upcoming release, we will be updating our Ruby version to 3.4.

When we update Ruby major or minor versions, there can be a bit of friction for extensions:

  • Pure Ruby extensions: Most will continue to work seamlessly, though a few might fail if they rely on deprecated features that Ruby has previously warned about.

  • Ruby C extension binaries: All extensions using Ruby C extension binaries will need to be rebuilt to stay compatible.

What’s next? We will soon be shipping this Ruby update to a SketchUp Labs release. Please keep an eye out for that launch so you can grab the build, test your extensions early, and get any necessary binary updates ready before full release.

If you have any questions or run into any snags while testing, please feel free to get in touch.

Will this labs release be runnable on old Intel Mac’s like mine (unlike the other recent labs releases)? If not I guess everyone will be taking their chances with whether my extensions will continue to work. I expect so, but have no way to check.
