Yes, copy-pasting I understand, but maybe @colin would have an insight about pitfalls in UNC references. As said, I noticed there is a difference, but I don’t know if it has practical consequences.
I tried send to LayOut, drag the SKP file into LayOut, and File Insert. On Mac and Windows they all leave me with only one file references. On Mac it starts with /Users/myname, and on Windows it’s C:\Users\myname. Even a copy and paste of geometry does not add anything to the references.
But, if you make a change and update model reference, then things are different. The three other ways of getting the model into LayOut all now look like the changed model, and the reference does change to be ./modename.skp on Mac, but stays the same on Windows. Copied and pasted things then become clipping files inside the LayOut document, which could lead to big files and some confusion later.
Going back to Mac, what happens if you have updated model reference, to get the ./ path, and now do the three ways of getting the same model into the document…
Send to LayOut makes a new document, so that viewport would need to be copied into the existing LayOut file. Doing that, or insert, or drag and drop, all keeps the new viewport pointing at the ./modelname reference.
I didn’t yet hit a combination that caused a problem. Even in a version I have that is more recent than most people’s, on Windows 11 I still get C:/Users/my name/Downloads/modelname.skp when doing a drag and drop.
When I drag a model from Explorer into LayOut, the file path starts with \mycomputer\myhomefolder.… and when I insert it it starts with c:\folder.… I think it is just a way of expressing the same thing in two ways, but I am still a bit worried.
I wondered if it was because I tried Windows 11. I tried Windows 10 now, and still get a path that starts with C:/Users/.
@trent may know if there is a reason different systems get different paths, or whether it matters at all.
I think I’ll go with the ‘Insert file’ option for safety. Thanks for all your input folks, very much appreciated.
Sorry for giving you a heart attack Dave!
