Right! The first gathering is on monday and it will be around that drawing. In english though most of us, including myself, aren’t native english speakers.
Send a message to @napperkt , who is organizing the event, with your email. He’ll probably still be able to set you up.
Impressive work you got there btw! Congratulations!
@andy_muzz@RyanE - welcome to the group! I just send you a PM to get your email addresses! I’ll meet with @JQL this afternoon for preparation - had a glimpse of what he will show us. This will be GOOD!
Ok - got it. You can delete your mail from this (public) forum again. This Private-Message part of the forum is a bit hidden but now we have your info. The invitation should be in your inbox now.
I just came across your pro users group and would like to join. I am a Landscape designer in the UK. My work is diverse and there is little similarity between the project documentation required across the schemes we get involved with. We specialise in the construction and detailing of schemes. Work comes from contractors, landscape architects and garden designers. They usually have a vision of what they want but often no kno Flint walls.pdf (1.8 MB) Rope bridge .pdf (1.9 MB)
wledge or inclination to resolve details and create CD’s for tender or build. A lot of the work we produce is simplified so that we maximise the effort and create assets that we can use at a future date (eg instead of having large drawing sheets with multiple details we often place one detail per page on a smaller sheet, making it available in any future scheme. Our output is typically DWGs or PDFs but we are experiencing requests to submit files suitable for Vector Works and Revit which is proving to be a challenge and not one we have resolved yet. We do not currently produce work that needs to be Bim compatible. We often work as an intermediary between designers and clients and contractors. Everything we do is created as an accurate 3D SU model from which we generate elevations. We try to represent alternative scenarios where possible so that they can be discussed with contractors and suppliers. Complex elements eg pools can require multiple sheets that address different project stages (eg a foundation plan). Generally the creation of drawing sets does not involve the use of extensions but the creation of the components that are used in those drawings often does. We try to be as accurate and true to real-life products while trying to maintain as low a file size as we can.
Ok - Monday the 10th is almost there. I had a call with @JQL yesterday evening and we discussed the agenda.
Here is what we came up with, though we sidetracked like mad man!.
10 Min: Greetings / Meeting Agenda / waiting for everybody to figure out how their microphone / camera works…
10 Min: Small intro round - We are serious about “SMALL” intro. Really just who are you, what’s your company, when did you start using Sketchup, what’s your hope / expectation for this group. Prep this - you only have a minute! But since we don’t know each other except for the forum it feels right.
45 Min: Keynote @JQL takes over and deep dives into his process. Now - we are a bit worried about this because it’s a first and there are several ways of how to handle it - @JQL could just talk for X minutes straight, he could “feel the room” and wander of into random directions (let by the currents) he can fly over all topics or he could deep dive into specifics. We kinda decided not to have decided anything. Ok - that’s not entirely true. We decided to skip anything “modeling-related” and go right into his favorite topic which is combining 3D and 2D to get details to contractors and such. I like that, because I want this entire endeavor to have a positive vibe. If we want to ■■■■■, we can use the forum. Here we want to learn “how others do it” so I want people to show the part of their process they are proud of, that works well, that they want to share with the world. We want this to be worthwhile everybody’s time. So I came up with three questions I want @JQL to answer.
60 Minutes - open discussion. @JQL s process may be the center and we can ask him all kind of stuff. He is obliged (unless there is some super-sensitive stuff) to open files, tag structures, whatever and show us more details. Maybe somebody wants to show a cool alternative, be ready to share your screen!
30 Min: This part will be smaller the next time I hope but I would like to get everybody’s opinion about how to progress from here. Are we all cool with how this has went down or do we want changes in the meeting agenda. For example: Maybe one Keynote is to little and we want to distribute the time to 2 keynotes, or we want a smaller keynote and more time for open discussion… We also need to find either a fixed method for setting the next appointment or a next appointment and should discuss at what intervals we want to do this (Like every 3/4/6 month?) This is also where you may dethrone me and choose somebody else to lead this going forward. Or not.
5 Minutes: tears and goodbyes. It might get emotional. Have support beer close by.
The time schedule is not quite a 3 h - we will see how it will go and if the group chooses to go longer we will deal with it. But I’ll try to keep us on track.
Last but not least - we came up with a bit of a theme for the first three sessions. So - @JQL is a firm believer in:
Session 1: “no template, ever evolving process, smart use of extensions”
for his process and some part of his keynote will focus on that. This tempts me to be next in line with a session on
Session 2: “I love templates / clear methods but haven’t included extension based automation in our process”
After this we could up this by a session
Session 3: “see what automation extension X can do for you, if you get over the learning curve”
Food for thought.
I’d be curious to join in a future session, next week doesn’t work for me.
3 hour long online session…! good luck guys and gals.
I co-manage a SKP peer to peer group and do a lot of teaching / presenting - I’ve found the sweet spot to be about 1.5 hours. Maybe longer with a break in there.
For the peer to peer group we usually have 1 hour of technical stuff, 15 minutes bullshit beginning and end. For me (teaching, peer to peer, board meetings) better to do several small sessions than one long one.
I hope this turns into something powerful for all involved though, regardless of how long you go!
Hi!
I missed this thread but would like to join… I probably won’t be albe to stick through the whole meeting but would be happy to chime in as much as I can…
Send me invite please…
Out of curiosity I would like to join, but unfortunately I will still be at work when the meeting starts and I might not have arrived at home until after the meeting is over.
Will there be recordings that people can watch online after the meeting?
I am not sure if our SketchUp workflow is as interesting, since we mainly use simplified building mass models for our analysis (privacy/sun/view/wind).
We will not record. Participants are expected to give detailed insights into their processes - recording this would be very tricky as you would need to check and double check if anything data-sensitive was shared.
Fantastic session today! Amazed by how much there is still to learn and continued to be wowed by workflow.
Joao, you are an incredible design and process thinker and it shines through in your work and even more, the way you talk luddites like me through! Looking forward to making this a more regular engagement.
Thanks for organising a truly excellent session. There’s a lot in there. You would be hard pushed to obtain this level of detail in a very expensive college course.
There’s nothing to beat watching seasoned professionals showing you how they work. I have to admit the session was long and I was hanging towards the end but I couldn’t miss what Joao had to say.
Thanks again to everyone for making it a worthwhile session.
