How to outline an sketch without overlapping

I was wondering the following:

let’s say I import (or draw) certain shape in front view, maybe this one is not the best example, but here we go:

And I still want to work on front view to outline the shape (maybe I’m trying to do a copy with certain variations), is there any way to outline it with some distance from it to avoid overlapping? (excuse my English).

While you’re drawing the shape, use Wireframe so no faces are shown.
