Hi, I am using Sketchup for simple drawings, and use them to dimensjonering of measures.
But now i am using a 3D scanner to scan different things, and wish to import the file from Mesh, and into a simple CAD file.
Is it someone how has any tips for this kind of converting?
You can use Scan Essentials for that.
If it’s a mesh, you could import it from sketchup as long as it is a compatible file, if you have a point cloud you need either scan essentials, the native importer from sketchup, or convert the point cloud on another software to a mesh and import it from sketchup. I recommend you to use another software, there are a couple good open source softwares that do that, Meshlab is one of the most popular. If you want to do it with Scan Essentials, you need to upgrade from sketchup pro to sketchup studio license, if you don’t need V-Ray and Revit importer it’s probably not worth it paying for the upgrade.
Thanks for advice, The Mesh is from Startum 3D scanner program, and i need to reduce the size of file to adjust edges before sending it to a factory who uses this file to make tool for produce a copy of a product.
do you know if Meshlabs can do that? I have a program wich name EXmodel that i can reduce the size of shape, and make it with strings, from mesh, but the model is not able to beeing adjusted, same problem as in Sketchup.
I am not sure if you understand, or can help me, but since you responded, i ask you:-)
kindly regards Morten
Meshlab can either create a mesh from a point cloud or from photos using photogrammetry. if you used a profesional scanner or the lidar from a phone, it will generate a point cloud, that point cloud file you must import it from meshlab and convert it into a mesh, there you have some settings to make it with more or less geometry, this affects the quality of course, the higher polygons count the better and more accurate mesh, but it could be a heavy file hard to handle for any 3D software. You can play with the setting until you get a good balance between detail and polygons count.
any ways from sketchup there are a couple ways to reduce the geometry even more if you consider after watching it on the program that it could be improved. Theres a hidden option but I don´t think you´ll like it, it is importing the mesh to Blender and using modifiers like shrink-wrap, make a quad model using the imported mesh just as reference, that´s something that I would enjoy a lot, but probably its not the best option for you as a beginner of the program, and learning blender would take a lot more time.
Thanks again, the challenge is to adjust edges, and make the model smaller.
I have program EXmodel to reduce size, but i cannot find any way to explode the model, either in Meshlabs, Sketchup, or Exmodel. Do you know if this is an obtion in any of these programs?
Y haven’t used or heard anything about Exmodel. Meshlab I’ve used just for photogrammetry just to generate a mesh and imported the model from sketchup or blender. For point cloud I use Scan Essentials cause I have an studio license, but I’ve never really needed to convert a point cloud to a mesh, anyways if you convert the point cloud to a mesh on meshlab or any other software that can do that, you can export it as obj or dae and import it from sketchup, it will be imported as a group, you can explode it if you want or edit the group without exploding it.
