Most often when I have a single surface and I draw additional lines, such as diagonally across the face, I get extra surfaces being created on top of each other that I have to delete before I can add a material color or pattern to it. Is there a setting or other way to avoid this constant problem? Thanks!
That can happen if the face is a long way from the origin. If the corners are not exactly coplanar, but they are near the origin, only one face is drawn. When it’s a long way from the origin the diagonal line that you draw causes two new faces to sit on top of the old one.
Here’s a topic I started in September 2019, talking about the problem. You can see the screen recording I added to one of the posts, to see how drawing a diagonal edge created two overlaying new faces. The extension sWilliams wrote solves the problem.
Thanks, Colin.
In my case, the face is not a long way from the origin and I think everything is coplanar. I’m also not importing anything. I’m just drawing lines.
The extension that you mentioned by sWilliams is fine, but not being a sophisticated user, is there an easier solution than installing extensions or writing or using code?
This problem happens so regularly that I expected this problem to be common for other users and for there to be an easy fix somewhere. Is that not the case?
Any suggestions, please? Thanks.
You could benefit yourself by spending some time at The SketchUp Campus. This is a site that will provide the basics for learning the SketchUp modeling process. Also, spend some time at the SketchUp SketchUp YouTube site. It provides much information including how to use each tool.
Could you show an example file that has problems? Then I can check if it has the issues I was talking about.
