How can I identify a material (in a large Materials palette) by clicking on its use in the model?

As my model has developed I’ve accumulated a large number of materials in the Materials palette.

Is there a way of pinpointing the material being used by selecting a surface using it? This will enable me to better organize the palette.

Yes. Look at Entity Info. It’ll show you the material on the selected face. If you click on the thumbnail there, it should open a panel that lets you see its name and if you want, choose a different one.
