Help modelling Curved, twisted and tapered beam

I want to model this sketch but I’m not sure what is the best way to create the twisted structure. I will be building it in oak but need to strengthen it with a steel armature inside.

How can I model it so that I can show the two parts working together.

Can this be done with the native features in sketchup or are there plugins that I can use to effect the result i would like? searches show similarish topics but most are very old.

Thank you

And if they are old, doesn’t the same shape result? The technique probably doesn’t differ, using Spline and Curviloft extensions.

Realistically it is a few curves and an extrusion, you may then need another shape going the other way and an intersection.
Try giving us your model attempts and we can correct from there.
Not me just now tho, bed time.

It was more to see if there were better more advanced plug ins to use

I will do. Thanks

The method indicated by Box can be done without extensions. As for new extensions, perhaps the working technique differs.
As an idea - quads and subdivisions.

This is almost exactly what i want to create but I’m a complete novice when it comes to using quads etc. I’ve downloaded quadtools and subD but its a lot to absorb! Can you tell me what you are using to adjust the angles in your vid at about 00:16?

Thank you!

Ive uploaded how far I’ve got (not very) and an image of what I’m trying to model (which would be quicker to make in real life imo)!

twisted beam.skp (27.4 KB)

It’s probably better to learn to create the model with native tools, the method indicated by Box. And, over time, learn about quads and subdivisions.

But could you tell me the tool or extension you were using at that point please?
Thanks

Thank you. Done!

What you saw in the image can be done with the Move tool, but if you really want to use an extension, you can use Vertex Tools, which in combination with SUbD allows/helps modeling with quads and subdivs.

Thank you
