That does not sound like a grid reference plane (construction grid).

It sounds like surface manipulation.
ThomThom has a rudimentary Bezier Surface tool. (ie, he said it wasn’t quite finished.)

It was supposed to be my second commercial extension, but I’ve not been able to maintain it. Recently I’ve focused open my subdivision extension.
