Hello everybody, does anybody know why I have this line problem suddenly happening (see attachment). I frequently click the eyeball off and on in the tags and outliner panel to make additional edits. Recently I turned off some Geometry to find all these lines from my walls and door openings appearing. The rectangles in the red circles are recently cut doorways, the rest are parts of other Geometry I have not recently changed or altered.
Please tell me why this is all of a sudden happening.
How do I avoid it in the future?
How do I fix it?
Thank you in advance for your help.
Looks to me as if you’ve got some geometry tagged. ALL edges and faces should be created AND remain untagged. Only groups and components should be given tags.
Share the .skp file so we can see exactly what you have set up.
Thank you, Yes, I recently started using tags and just started tagging stuff to make it easier to turn features on and off with no concerns.
My file is too big to upload. Any suggestions?
That works. Incorrect tag usage for sure although not as bad as I expected.
Purging unused content once in a while is a good idea, too. Plenty of hoarded stuff in your model.
Purging unused stuff reduced file size by 40%… I share the model but it’s still slightly too large to upload directly. Back in a moment.
FWIW, I would recommend unticking Length Snapping in Model Info>Units. That will make precise modeling easier.
Thank you DaveR. I have never used SketchUp before and am in way over my head. This has been the most time-consuming project ever. The learning curve is pretty steep.
I took your recommendation of purging from Model Info>Statistics>Purged Unused.
Can you give me an example of the “hoarded stuff.” Is that the stuff I purged?
The snapping issue has been driving me insane. Thank you for the recommendation. I did notice that zooming in relieves some of the snapping control problems.
Can you help me remove the tags? I am finding the “remove tags all tags tool” somewhat confusing, I can’t find it. I found a try free plugin at mind.sight.studios. Is that the only way?
Yes. It’s the unused components and materials, mainly. Presumably you’ve been bringing in components from the 3D Warehouse and then deleting them. Simply deleting components from the model space is not enough to remove them from the file. They have to be purged. Also, all but one of the styles you played with got deleted.
Before diving headlong into a project you should spend some time learning how to use the application. (This applies to any application or tool.) Start with the tutorials at learn.sketchup.com
I shared your model after fixing the incorrect tag usage. I used an extension from Sketchucation called Default Tag Geometry. If you just want to remove the tags in the model, select the tags in the Tags panel, right click on them, and choose Delete Tag. Then give Untagged to the entities.
Thank you so much DaveR. I did as you suggested by doing the tutorials and then some. This project quickly took me into uncharted territory in working with round Geometry, multi-floor levels, arcs, and domes where the solid tools don’t work. Additionally, the drawings I have are practically useless, not to scale, and only 3 dimensions for everything.
Can you please elaborate on “I shared your model after fixing the incorrect tag usage.” It sounds like you edited the shared file from DropBox. I have downloaded the file and don’t understand what you mean.
Thank you for the suggestion of “Tag Geometry.” I figured out “give Untagged to the entities.” Having done so I still have the problem in my original file with the stray lines. How do I fix this? I’m afraid if I delete these remnants, I will lose the faces of my Geometry.
Yes, I uploaded the file to DropBo after I fixed incorrect tag usage and purged the unused stuff. I provided the link to it in my reply after the one where I showed the results of removing tags from the geometry and purging the file.
The Default Tag Geometry extension will go through the entire model and remove tags from all edges and faces. If you choose to do that manually, start by selecting all in your model and in Entity Info, change Tags to Untagged. Then you would need to open groups and components to do the same. Alternatively you could just choose to delete all of the tags so that everything ends up untagged. Then create the tags you need and assign them to the groups and components in the model.
I don’t understand what you mean by “stray line”. Are you referring to loose, ungrouped edges and faces? All edges and faces should be collected into groups or components to prevent them from merging with other edges and faces. If you did something like grouping faces without including the edges, you could either delete the edges or select the edges, cut them to the clipboard (Edit>Cut) and then open the appropriate component or group for editing and use Edit>Paste in place to paste the edges inside.
Yes, that’s it exactly, thank you for the solution. You are awesome for helping me out to the extent that you did. What I don’t understand is why this happened all of a sudden. I had no issue at all, then there it was. It seems like it’s because I was repeatedly hiding and unhiding. The other half of the model, the restaurant does not have this problem, but I haven’t worked that half very much.
I don’t know if you have anything else to add but thank you for getting me on my way.
It’s hard to say exactly what you did to get things like that. I suspect you weren’t selecting all of the attached geometry when making groups and so you were leaving some of it behind.
