Although my compact space mouse does have a few buttons, I hardly use them and still switch from the space mouse to the keyboard when necessary.
My Setup:
- Mouse Logitech G502 HERO
- 3DMouse SpacemouseCompact 3DConnexion
- and normal Keyboard
I don’t use the spacemouse buttons at all…only the puck, mainly for zooming and rotating.
Where it comes to precision I use more the normal mouse.
Doubleclick & triple click programmed to the mousebuttons.
Since I use SketchUp on multiple computers, some of which aren’t mine, I use a basic standard 3-button Logitech M510. It works perfectly on Windows, Mac, and even with SketchUp for iPad. I’ve worn the feet off the bottom of a couple of them making them a little more difficult to push around but I’ve never had issues with the buttons. The M510 has a couple of additional buttons on the left side but I’ve never decided how I want to map them.
Yes for navigation. I don’t have a problem moving my hand from keyboard to joystick and back again. It’s no worse than remembering some less used shortcuts.
It’s hard to beat just a good basic 3 button mouse.
Still rocking my Logitech G Pro Superlight mouse. It does what I need to and I can use it while recharging.
Logitech MX Ergo S Track Ball for the right hand and the Razor Tartarus V2 for the left hand.
Just wish there was a way to use the number keys without taking a hand off either the track ball or the Razor ![]()
Thanks for all the great replies!
For me, there’s another issue. I am disabled and accurate movements are difficult. I need the constant contact of a tablet and stylus with opposing fingers. Maybe I should try a vertical mouse.
I have the 3D Connexion Space Mouse as well as its CadMouse partner, but they’re sitting in a drawer. I thought the Space Mouse was cool but I didn’t find it necessary for my methods and have reverted to a simple Logitech M720 Triathlon.
I’ll say this: the 3D Connexion company itself is great. My first CadMouse broke about a year in of use and they just sent me a new one with no strings attached. But for my modeling space a mouse with a scroll wheel and a few extra buttons if I run out of keyboard shortcuts is all I need.
A vertical mouse could definitely be worth trying many people find it reduces strain and improves control, especially with limited fine-motor movement. Since you already work well with constant contact from a stylus, an ergonomic device might give you that same stability. Hope you find a setup that feels comfortable and precise!
My personal favorite is the Logitec G602. Not sure wha the current revision of that one is, but its my go-to mouse for everything.
I recently migrated from SU version 8 on Windows to SU Pro on my new Mac. With the bundled Apple mouse. No wheel on this mouse. I REALLY miss the clickable wheel and hold option to activate Orbit mode. So, will SU Pro on the Mac with Logitech MX (for example) act just like my old Windows setup as regards the clickable wheel?
There are GUI differences between Windows and Mac, but the Logitech MX will behave the same on both of them. The Apple mouse is not really suitable for SketchUp.
I wanted the apple mouse to work… but all o got for my effort was a cramped hand and slower design… I have been using MX mice on Mac since the first one released. better form factor, button layout, and battery. other than looking kinda cool, the apple mouse is really not suitable for much. Go for MX!
