Using the free web version to design my upcoming renovation. Working off Firefox on my Linux laptop (primarily) and sometimes Firefox on my windows laptop. Works well except for slightly lagginess on the windows laptop (iGPU only so that’s to be expected).
I’ve been wanting to edit on the go using my Samsung Galaxy Fold 6 (Android foldable phone). So far its been useful for just logging in to sketchup web and showing the design to architects/contractors so I can get quotes. But when it comes to editing, I can’t seem to get the soft keyboard to show up when I’m trying to enter dimensions for any tools. Is this just a bug with the website’s labelling of the input field?
For reference, this behaviour happens in Firefox on Android. No difference in behaviour whether I’m opening the website while in the ‘normal’ UI of the Galaxy Fold 6 or when using Samsung’s external display setup DEX (I have an external graphics tablet/monitor which I also use with this device)
Well, the VCB (“value control box”) is not designed (neither version is except on iPad) to focus on click – which I think is essential for displaying the soft keyboard. The system assumes “just type” behavior for entering values on any device. I’m afraid that requires an external (e.g bluetooth) keyboard. ( Perhaps 3rd party floating keyboard ??)
I also have a Fold 6, but it hasn’t occurred to me to use Sketchup on it yet… but I’m sure DEX - perhaps also the normal UI - handles external keyboard and mouse quite well… I’ll try it …
I don’t think current Samsung DEX allows using 3rd party software keyboards though… everytime I change to Dex it just brings up the samsung keyboard instead of my default gboard.
I tried it, connected my Fold6 to a 4K Dell monitor via USB-C that has a built-in USB hub, and I connected the keyboard and mouse to it. Well, I won’t say it’s very good, because the mouse works differently than on Windows, and the SU web (Chrome) didn’t work very smoothly, but you can type in the dimensions with the external keyboard…
The software keyboard can’t be kept permanently on the phone screen, so as you say it doesn’t really work.
Conclusion:
Sketchup wasn’t designed for Android.
Yeah unfortunately that seems the case. It’s a pity because with my use case (having a wacom graphics tablet which is both monitor-sized AND has a pen for this sort of editing) seems like being able to do this would be really good.
Well, on the tablet front, the iPad is what the SU team chose - as a means of portability.
Well, I also have an M1, where things work fine with the pencil. However, I somehow don’t like the touch screen/pencil or the touchpad, so when I use it (very rarely) I still have it in its keyboard case with a Bluetooth mouse.
I actually think a laptop is best for a Web application too.
