Drawing a shape in a single plane

I’m following a tutorial titled "Square One - Using the Follow Me Tool.

There are some flat profile shapes on screen that are perpendicular to a solid circle. The shape is selected and with the follow-me tool a click on the circle makes something like a chess board queen.

When I draw my shape, it’s not all on one flat plane. It whizzes off in all directions with every segment and trying to use the follow-me tool reports that my shape is not valid. I’ll include it for the amusement of readers but I would appreciate knowing what it is that I am doing wrong.

Thanks in anticipation.

Draw a rectangle first, big enough for your shape. Then draw your shape on the rectangle, making sure you get the “on face” inference. Delete the parts of the rectangle that are not part of your shape and do the follow-me..

Expanding on that reply, when you mouse or click over empty space, SketchUp has to infer where in 3d under that point on the screen you meant. Absent other clues, it will go to whatever principal axis direction or plane it finds, not necessarily what you expected. To overcome this, you need to give it more information. That’s what SketchUp’s inference engine is for. But sometimes the inference isn’t enough and you have to help it out using methods such @tweenulzeven described.

Thank you for our advice. I was able to draw a shape on a single plane using a rectangle that I later deleted. Moving my shape over the circle reference and use the “Follow-Me” command, I still get garbage. I was hoping for a shape that looks like a Queen in a chess set. I attach my collection of follow-me tutorial items and maybe you can see what I am doing wrong.

Cheers.

Your profile isn’t centered on the path.

Dear Box, I’ve finally got it! Thanks to you and all the other members of the community who gave me feedback. That’s one of the reasons I took out a subscription package with Sketchup.
