Draw colored lines

Is there a simple way to change the color of a single line, or to set its color in advance?
Drawing everything in black can make it hard to pick out a certain line in all the jumble.
I’ve tried various experiments, but the lines stay black.

You can change the edge color in the style window (edit → edge settings) to “by material” and use the paint bucket to color lines.
