Counting components in parts of model

is there an easy way to get counts of components in use by parts of the model. I don’t want a simple total of the number of any one component, I want to know by a specific group or group tree how many of a certain or all components are being used. Seems like there should be an extension to do this, or some native function. There are some ruby samples in various threads, but these barf up either a very limited or too much information. There should be some sort of report or other analysis capability.

Thats it!!! can make this work quite nicely. In all the videos I’ve watched and using sketchup over the the last 3+ years, Ive never seen this. My bad.
