Corrupted File Recovery (SketchUp 2024) - "Failed to open document"

Hi everyone,

I am facing a critical issue with an architecture project file in SketchUp 2024. My file got corrupted out of nowhere and now I keep getting the “Failed to open document” error.

The file size is still normal (around 48MB), so I believe the 3D geometry is still there, but the header or the code might be broken. I was saving it in a Google Drive synced folder, which might have caused the crash.

I have already tried all the standard troubleshooting steps without success:

  • Renamed the .skb backup file to .skp (it gives the same error).

  • Downloaded older versions from the Google Drive web version history.

  • Moved the file to my local Desktop/C: drive.

  • Tried importing it into a new, blank SketchUp file.

  • Tried opening it in SketchUp for Web.

I am completely stuck and running out of time for this project. Could someone with technical knowledge please take a look at the file code and see if it’s possible to recover the geometry?

Do not save to cloud folders. Save locally, backup to the cloud. It causes lots of corrupt file issues we see here.

Have you tried updating to 2026 and seeing if it will open? This assumes you have a subscription. Are you using a copy of SketchUp that isn’t legal?

I downloaded the 2026 version but it still did not open. I dowloaded 2026 from the official site. My sktchup is legal. If anyone could open and send it to me saved correctly it would save me. I tried averything. I need serious help. Thanks so much.
