Comparing 2 models to show differences

Is there a plug in, or way of working that will allow me to compare two very similar models to show the differences? Maybe a simple subtraction would work (based on 3 specific reference points)? I want to have certainty about my version control and understand exact differences made between them.

By ‘models’ do you mean a simple object (group/component) or a model with many nested groups/components? Do you want to know the difference only in terms of the object’s size, position or other properties (eg. material)?
If it’s just a simple object and it’s a solid group/component, have you tried using Solid Tools (Split)?

Here is a pic of one file content: a voltage reducer housing (about 60mm x 40 x 35) . I save versions every time I make a major change - but occasionally want to go back: so want to know the precise difference between two different versions in different files

I bring in my models as groups / components. Remove all materials. Color one transparent blue, the other transparent pick. Look for differences. You can also use the entity info to see volume or surface area or edge length to really fine tune your investigation.

In my work (timber frame and framing / architecture) I also look at materials lists, etc.

Into each version I save, I will probably do 10-20 individual tiny changes (0.5mm is fairly common) of length or spaces. Most of the work is for STLs and 3D printing. So “looking for differences” just means checking up to 100 minor tweaks. Not an easy option.

This seems more like a question for @Fredo6 level.

Yeah, I often have to track changes to full timber or structural drawings and look for 1/4" discrepancies. I’m not sure there is an easier way to do it… except maybe in your case you can make everything solid, bring the two models into the same SKP file, scale up by 1000 or 100 and use the solid tools to make a ‘split’ of the objects - then you might be able to see differences?

But - what is the goal?
Are you trying to back track to find ‘the right version’?
Or something else.

Version control / multiple saves with descriptive text might help on the next project.

yes, I just want to be certain I put all the changes through before going to print the thing. Each one so printed is either Valuable, or Wasted!

Maybe by exporting both models to STL (ASCII) and compare both files with text comparator ?

When using 3D model comparison from Trimble Connect, you should scale up by 1000 (most SketchUp users that model for 3D printing model in meters as if they were millimeters anyway) because of the tolerances. I copied below from the link that @daniel_pidcock gave:

"Keeping in mind the foundational characteristics that objects must have a geometry and only part level properties are checked by the comparison, then a change is detected if the change is above the tolerance values listed below:

When an object has a geometry change more 0.01 mm
When a numerical length property value changes more than 0.6 mm
When a numerical mass property value changes more than 0.1 % and more than 1 g
