Merging two similar models

I have two different models that are very similar, but definitely different- because two of us have worked on them. Is there a way to merge the models, or to find out the differences before putting them together?

I don’t think there’s a reliable way to automatically do that. What parameters would you be using to identify the differences? How would you identify which objects to keep and which to replace?

Start new file.

Import model A. It should be a component. Use Material Tools plugin to remove the materials from this model. Paint bucket and make it hot pink give it some transparency.

Import model B. It should be a component. Use Material Tools plugin to remove the materials from this model. Paint bucket and make it light blue give it some transparency.

Move the 2 components to a common, know reference so they are in the same space as each other. Orbit around and look for differences.

The outcome needs to be one.

Are you talking about differences in:

  • geometry: dimensions and/or use of (nested) groups and components
  • use of tags
  • use of materials
  • (section planes and maybe even also scenes etc.) ?

You need to be more precise about what models they are.

The models are two versions of a 30,000 sf floor plan. The basic wall locations and finishes are the same, but additional work has been done on each model- one has a new ceiling, one has revised furniture. Both have certain areas that have been revised in different ways, so it would be nice to quickly see how they are different. I am not concerned about section planes or views, but material useage, for sure.

this will help. what happens though, when I find the differences? Do I have to choose the parts and pieces I want to keep and bring them into another new file?

yes… these are great questions that I do not know the answers to. If there was a way for two people to simultaneously work on the same model, this wouldn’t be an issue at all…

Well you have to decide what the model should be… what fits, what doesn’t, etc. Software can’t do that for you.

Then edit one model to be the way you want. Or copy / paste into what you want to keep into a new model.

thanks
