Is there a way to get an area of a shape in layout?

No, so that would make it a feature request.
You can from SketchUp models, though, if you use the label tool and select the < FaceArea > tag

It would be super handy in Layout, even if it was just a paper space. The space I am after is not a pre existing item I have drawn and would work really well overlayed in Layout
