Blender Discussion

One of the forums I help mod we have an upvote option is well. Seems to be needed here

Funny, but my first assumption was that if a user “flagged” a post, that merely called it to the attention of a moderator. It seems odd to me that just any user has the power to block posts.

Hence my post about having the ability to up-vote. Seems rather one sided.

Yes, Robert, I believe you’re correct, a user flags a post, then Jody or other moderator decides to hide it. Of course only one side gets “moderated.” If you love SketchUp then there’s never any problem.

For instance, does anyone think Thom Thom would get flagged for sharing a video about Vertex Tools? Or Justin for sharing a video about SketchUp? Both make money on their products, but of course it’s in SUs interest, so folks are ok.

But, even though we’re in the Corner Bar, where a specific thread was created to only talk about Blender, the one-sidedness still exists.

Certainly no other off topic posts have been flagged here.

On another note–

There’s a recent thread somewhere here where it shows SketchUp literally coming to a standstill with only a few hundred thousand poly model. With no support for modern GPUs, it’s sorta like trying to get down the highway in a rickshaw.

I would imagine some of the people here would be interested in talking about a real issue like that and not trying to hide someone’s viewpoint on a conversation.

Robert, thanks for taking the time to post.

Here’s another free video on how to export from SketchUp using correct units to Blender:

I don’t think that is how it works, I don’t think @jody is involved. What I understand is a post that is flagged multiple (more than 3 or 4) times will be hidden.

no, some user (levels) can hide instantly.
It depends on the Badge. If multiple ‘lower’ badge members flag, it gets hidden too. Most of the time, the moderator is way to late to interfere…

Oh my…I got an automated message…

I might start a new thread to lure new users
Anyway, I don’t fully understand what the problem is to use different tools. I am pragmatic, if a job takes more than half an hour, you don’t use the right tool/extension/workflow.

Hi Aaron,

As I’ve repeatedly said, I make nothing from SketchUp folks. Over 99% of revenue I make selling Blender products come from elsewhere. I have no monetary incentive to post here. Truth be told I’m retired and live on a horse ranch in Texas.

I don’t post those videos as advertising, I post them as as answers to questions about Blender.

Yes, I am very active in other boards, Blender boards as well. There we don’t have this problem where if someone doesn’t like what you say, they just hide your post. Yes, I do think it a bit draconian.

In those boards different ideas are discussed and debated.

Hey, I’m off on this small corner of this message board-- taking about blender in a topic about blender-- and yet you guys continue to track me down to silence me.

Why do I even care? It’s because I know what Trimble is doing to SketchUp and it’s users, and I don’t like it.

SketchUp used to be my favorite app of all, and Trimble, and by proxy those working there have not done a good job sheparding forward what once was an amazing product. If that’s not IOTTMCO, then you’re not paying attention.

Those that see the eventual outcome from this lack of stewardship need options. Aaron, that is the purpose of this “off in the Corner Bar” thread.

I get it you don’t agree with what I’m saying. The problem is it’s really hard to actually defend Trimble’s side in this discussion, as there’s such a lack of progress and performance over the past several years, yet you continue to ask people to pay in advance via subscription for a product with no visible road map.

It easier to just hide people’s posts you don’t agree with.

We used to have a saying in America, “While I don’t agree with what you’re saying, I will defend to the death your right to say it.”

Huh!??
How “long” does it take you to install a kitchen?

To bring a little peace in these exchanges, I have just been sent a demo of a plug-in in Blender (which is pre-installed (*) ) which allows you to get closer to the user experience of SketchUp in Blender. In particular, draw on the faces.

(*) it is call now "Mesh:Snap_Utilities_Line

Already replied:

a. No, please do the math. My responses w/regard to videos are not anywhere close to “an overwhelming majority”

b. I thought this is the Blender thread. Is it not ok to post helpful videos about Blender or not? If not, just ban them.

You are correct…I meant to say a majority of your flagged posts…

So, first you guys create a thread (just for me) to talk about Blender, to which I participate in. Then you spend all your time going back and forth about this and that-- definitely not about Blender. And when I reply in a most reasonable way with logic based discourse, you threaten to lock down the thread, thus removing all further discussion about Blender?

Why don’t you just let us be-- and let us discuss Blender?

If you make a rule in the forum there should be no more Blender discussion, then I’m happy to abide. FWIW, all other forums I belong to have very active and vibrant discussions about other software.

and finally someone will say that the subscription is “chippwalters” fault

The issue is not you discussing… the issue is that on a regular basis the forum moderators are notified that your posts (in this specific thread) are being flagged as spam or off-topic. This has nothing to do with “us” letting you be… this is about the community having issue with the posts on this forum.

To back @jody 's question earlier… why are you fighting to maintain this thread when you don’t seem to like the way that this forum is managed, or the software that it was created to support?

  1. Is it possible that existing SU users just don’t like my point of view, and that’s why they flag my posts?

  2. Can you point to a single flagged post where I’m not responding to a question?

@chippwalters, I really don’t get it that you don’t get it. This thread was created by a forum member, @endlessfix, who got tired of you “blendering” off topic in other threads. I was happy with this new thread too. Lots of information about Blender. (I didn’t flag any of the posts here, although I can see why others who got annoyed by some of the posts eventually did).

Somehow at some point you seemed to feel the need to start of and keep on bashing SketchUp for (Gob knows) whatever reason. You keep confusing discussing Blender and your disappointment about SketchUp “going subscription”. That is not a Blender topic.

Why not stick with discussing Blender, it’s an amazing piece of software. I watched the entire video about the interview with Ton Rosendaal (Blender), very inspiring guy. I’m not at all sure whether he would approve of the way you are trying to promote Blender here.

To me it seems that you are comparing a sophisticated digital 3D painters easel with a sophisticated digital 3D drawing board. They are in a different league.
I watched different posted Blender video’s here. The “10 minutes” creation of a space ship. It had zero dimensions. Great but was it accurate, to what dimensions?
Then your video about recreating a SketchUp arche in Blender. It was like a Bob Ross show I watched the other day: a little bit of “Van D.yke Brown” here, a bit of “Indian Yellow” there, constantly hopping from one menu to the next. I thing you can do way better but this example is a disaster to showcase Blender.

I will (once again) try Blender when I’m better equiped with a new PC. But for sure I will stick to SketchUp too, as my favorite 3D modeler, accurate and easy to use.

A very simple answer: Because I was asked a question as to why I participate here.
