Even though SketchUp is not the most resource demanding software, this is not the point here as the OP is seeking for better performance nevertheless so I don’t think the OP is concerned with upgrading cost of his hardwere.
As for Layout, it is working perfectly fine on my 6 years old PC and it is as smooth and as fast as any other 2D softwares such as CorelDraw. Maybe some PC users are facing problems with it and this could be related to hardware issues. So I don’t believe it is a software problem!
I recommend the OP to test LO on 2 identically priced Mac and PC and see for himself the results. He can do by ordering the 2 machines to compare the performance, then decide which computer to return. Just make sure the PC have discrete GPU.
Yes is it achievable… Historically, Windows computer always offered better performance than Mac of the same price, and it is still the same case today. I know what you will say, so I will debate no more.
I have always compared the two with diesel engines and gas, initial pricing might be favoring for gas, but in the long run, I prefer a diesel.
(This is about the intel based Mac though, I haven’t got much to dive into the new engine)
Lately, with more windows only apps and features, I tend to switch to Windows, but as always, if not to tech savy, you can learn to hate Windows and grow to appreciate the Mac.
(Although Apple’s marketing seems to go for the ‘Facetiming sociable DJ’s out there😀 )
I run layout on pc and export usually a high quality PDF that I then optimize with abobe acrobat and save to “mobile”. The built in Lay-out export is too large for my taste but the acrobat PDF is something I can email and still has the quality needed.
My refurb pc does. Already proven by the SU benchmarks posted here. I have $500 or so in it.
Edit:
User mpoole32 posted his M1 Mini benchmark at 28.9488
My refurb PC gets 31.7650 as of this morning
I use both versions. Long story short - both versions work approximately the same. LO is slow on both platforms. Depending on your needs LO PDF output may be fine or maybe bad. For my graphic design needs, I prefer the Mac version of LO. PDF output on Windows has an antialiasing issue and some issues with embedding color profiles which causes problems when imported into Adobe Illustrator.
This is very interesting. Thank you! Why do you choose one sometimes and the other sometimes? What do you make of the people who say that it runs better on a PC?
Simply because I partly work from home on PC and from my office where I have iMac. Both computers have relatively the same specs and run relative the same. My PC though cost me 1/2 the price of the iMac. Not sure if it’d be true today considering current hardware prices. Overall I can’t give you a scientific answer which is better. For me, SkethUp runs equivalently very good on Mac and a PC that is 1/2 the price of the Mac, and LayOut is very slow and is annoying on both platforms.
This is the most helpful thing I could have heard. The fact that you run your same files on both a Mac and PC with similar results. That honestly takes the guesswork and estimations out of the fact that everyone who gives their opinions uses the software differently. Thank you so much.
I have a Mac and a Win10.
Both have Intel i9 processor. My Mac is always the fastest.
It is in fact SketchUp that is made in a way, that Sketchup will run on all computers.
So SketchUp uses only a part of de multiprocessor, de Intel computer has.
Mayor is the clock working speed of the processor.
If you have a processor working on 3.6 HGZ wil SketchUp working faster than on a 2,6GHZ processor.
Refurb as bought as a refurb Dell Precision (4th gen i7) desktop from Newegg.com. I added in a 512 gb sata drive (new, around $50) 16 gb of ddr3 ram and yes a used GTX 650 Ti that I bought from one of my son’s gamer friends. I have $500-$600 in it.
This is my home box which I do take work home on and all of last summer during Covid.
My work box is a Dell 8th gen 8700 i7, 32 gb ram, 512 gb M.2 NVMe and RTX 2080. It’s best SU benchmark is 34.3371 fps.
Hey Keith,
I do appreciate your pragmatic and grounded attitude to what we all simply must learn and put up with regarding this condition we all suffer: Slow LayOut. Although we have all been forced to cope (by employing a myriad of work-arounds) for many years, do you ever want to ask “Why?”
Wouldn’t it be nice if Trimble could just make the effort to solve this long standing speed problem with LayOut? Now that they are getting all this subscription money, it seems to me that it is time for Trimble to spend some of that revenue where it will really benefit the most users … Fix LayOut!
I thought the recent LayOut Petition might make some difference … but so far, where’s the beef?
(And yes, I am one of those Mac users that keeps complaining!)
Best Regards!
