Welding a cube is counterproductive generally. As you can see here it forces extra unwanted edges.
They are different things. Welding joins segments together while grouping wraps geometry all together whether welded or not.

Welding and grouping are completely different things, while welding is an option, grouping is a must, you can have either welded or split lines in a geometry, but that geometry must be grouped, welding doesn’t replace grouping.
