When do you think sketchup pro is going to integrate all the modeling tools as part of the plan?

When do you think sketchup pro is going to integrate all the special modeling tools as part of the plan? Why is the software still heavily relying on 3rd party plugins while it has increase it’s pro plan significantly from where it started.

I have been a user since the very beginning and it seems like my 2018 version is not far from the developments that has been done for the latest version. I’m very surprised that after all these years, 3rd party plugin could have been integrated because of the pricing.

I hope they will be able to integrate box modeling with all the vertex and surface slicing and smoothing. Very essential for a simple software.

Any plans on doing this soon? I hope the development team would come up with something creative in the next update. New sketchup versions are still empty of features year by year.

Sketchup has all the modelling tools. Extensions are just there to automate processes.
Extensions are the property of their authors.

I think this question has been asked for many years. I cant see Sketchup taking on much of what is in an extension. If the extension is free then they dont need to take it on, and if its paid they cant take it on in case other extension creators will stop creating for fear of having their work taken from them.

When someone new takes up Sketchup its the simple UI and modelling process which allows them to learn and develop and when they improve and specialise then they can add the extensions they need.

Exactly my point. I was thinking they would absorb all those extensions after doing the subscription and pay the guys who did the better extensions. Like making them a special feature that’s included in the subscription.

All these years of development, the software is still empty. Simple is good but empty is not.

I know that, but none of these are making sense when you pay for a subscription without substance. There should be some features years after years of development. Maybe buy one of the extensions and make it part of the “new sketchup feature”

You get to use the software if you pay for it. That is the substance. If you don’t need it you won’t use it or pay for it. There is no free lunch.

There is such thing called development. You’re just missing the point. I will always pay to use it and I did for years.

I do think Trimble is working on several items that are very strong/good features for people who are in industries (like construction, architecture, and etc.) that will/already do make it much easier to work with/share/communicate with customers/potential customers.

I also think that the basic tools in SketchUp are pretty good, and the tools is pretty easy to learn. However, I think there are tons of plugins out there that are things that address some of the weaknesses in the basic tools. As examples (just a few and these are not meant to be negative or picking on the plugins developers):

  • SkethUp Plus has additional capabilities from some of the most basic tools that almost anyone who uses SketchUp.
  • Fredo6 has a number of tools that again, expand on or address missing attributes of many of the basic SketchUp tools.
  • ThomThom’s SubD plugin provides capabilities that are part of the basic capabilities of almost all other design tools out there. Even including free things 3D drawing tools like Blender.

I could go on with others (excluding things like rendering features which Trimble is also flirting with). I also notice that in the educational field SketchUp is not included or presented as an option in any of the colleges around me. I think enhancing the basic 3D drawing tools/capabilities of SketchUp could help in these regards.

IMO SketchUp is the basis of what is/can be a very strong and easy to use tool. I would just like to see Trimble embark more effort on improving the basic tools and paying a little more attention to the existing user base. As a last example, I have seen many comments on this forum and other forums (like SketchUcation) complaining about the updated icons on the UI but have not seen a single response from Trimble on this topic.

Thank you. I apologize to come in like this as a newbie. But I’m well aware of the things that has been going on with every release. Sketchup is my major software above all else. I’m an architect designer and a 3d hobbyist, I also mentor aspiring 3d enthusiast. I use sketchup in everything that I do. From presentation of a design to creating a model for rendering and models for 3d printing. I also have subscriptions of plugins for organic modeling. I stopped using 3d studio max because of sketchup 20 years ago. I was just curious of the what’s going on with the development, that’s the reason why I tried to join the forum. Maybe I will get answers. But thank you to everyone that responded. I will be more careful with my choice of words and hope to share my expertise as well.

I do understand the frustration, it’s one we commonly hear. While I believe there have been significant advancements in SketchUp and Layout in the last few years, it’s human nature to want more and to focus on our own specific needs. One of the challenges is that the wide variety of extensions available allows each one of us to customize SketchUp to fit our needs in very different ways, each of us has a collection of custom tools and a setup that feels “natural” and “obvious” for our own industry and use case. The extensions or functions you might like to see incorporated are likely different than ones I would like. There are some universal functions that have been brought in, the flip tool is a good example, and I agree there are other functionalities that could be brought in, it’s a good thing to keep respectfully reminding Trimble of our needs and to push development. But in many cases functions are not universally used no matter how much your own workflow might rely on them and those are better left as external extensions. It’s also a question of finite resources and effort, and in general I would like to see more effort put into bug squashes prior to releases and UI development (things only Trimble can do) than into re-inventing an extension that already works.
