Turn a curved line into a group

Good point, it seems only Image would not work that way. Should Make Group and Make Component show in the menu for an arc, like they do now for an image?

There is no any default shortcut set for me, in SU2023. Nor in SU2017 make. However if I create that shortcut (or whatever else) it will group even a single selected edge. Similar as you execute it from the Edit menu… :innocent:

I knew what you meant.
downside: increasing file size (if misused for everything).
plus: isolate single entity from other geometry (no intersection) and… the option to lock

As @Box mentioned, we can already easily group single entities. So IMO there’s no need to ā€œpoluteā€ the right click context menu (as an answer to your next question)

For images it works great from the context menu, but also [Shift] [G] wraps an image in a group.

The ability to make an image be a group with a keyboard shortcut was added recently. Previously the Edit menu item was grayed out, and the keyboard shortcut would also fail.

The reason for this was a feature request that dated long ago for the ability to lock images of floorplans directly and keeping them visible when editing another group.
(The technique of exploding images and then grouping and locking results in the fading textures when editing other groups and so you would always had to work around that)

That is odd, for as long as I can remember g was make component and shift g was make group.
I specifically remember it because when I first read it in the help files I thought it was stupid and made more sense the other way around. I’ve had a look through Help and various old threads about default shortcuts and it seems all the cheat sheets have gone.

For as long as I can remember g was make component, BUT shift g was never ever there for me to make group. To be entirely sure, I checked both of my two computers for the installed version of SU (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023) and the shortcut for ā€œEdit/Make groupā€ is blank.

The quick reference cards are here:
https://www.sketchup.com/quick-reference-cards/sketchup-2023/en
(You can substitute the version number down to 2019 in a link text to get older version)

You can see, even the Make Component (G) shortcut does not mentioned in these cards.

A possible explanation is that the installer takes over the older shortcuts from the older version, so if you set it up 10+ years ago, shortcuts always have been transferred… !?
Or you, subconsciously, automatically export and import them…

You may be right, or it could be that it is carrying over because it was a default at some stage and has been removed.
I found some posts from way back commenting that it was odd that Make Component had a shortcut and not Make Group. And others alluding to using shift g for make group, one of them was from John Bacus, so it is possible it was added in at some stage.
Perhaps I’m wrong that it was ever the default ( although it isn’t one I would naturally choose to set), but I guess the point for this thread is you can assign a shortcut to Make Group which will allow you to make a single object a group.
