SketchUp 4D Timeliner Concept – Looking for Ruby Development Support

Hi SketchUp community,

After years of working around the limitations of construction sequencing and phasing in SketchUp, I’ve finally decided to take things a step further. Like many of you in the BIM/VDC space, I’ve found it frustrating that such a capable modeling platform still lacks a native, scalable solution for 4D construction planning, especially when trying to integrate with tools like Microsoft Project or Primavera.

In my own workflow, I’ve typically had to export models into Navisworks to use Timeliner, which then introduces the usual issues: broken or inconsistent object attribution from Revit, version control problems, and a general disconnect between the design model and the construction sequence. It works, but it’s clunky, time consuming, and not ideal for rapid iteration or client facing visualisation.

So I’ve decided to explore the Ruby API and begin developing a SketchUp extension that brings true 4D sequencing, Timeliner style functionality, directly into SketchUp. The vision is to treat SketchUp as both the modelling and sequencing environment, removing the need for external coordination tools and enabling a much tighter feedback loop between design, methodology, and buildability.

At a high level, I’m aiming for the following:

Object based task assignment where groups and components are tied to schedule activities
Timeline playback with visual sequencing to simulate construction
Integration or syncing with scheduling tools through CSV, API, or direct links to Microsoft Project
Basic clash or logic checking tied to sequence, not a full Navisworks replacement but practical site level validation
A clean UI that fits naturally within SketchUp’s workflow

Longer term, I genuinely believe something like this could position SketchUp as a serious contender in the 4D planning space simply because its faster and has a diverse warehouse of construction staff, equipment and props. This is especially key for small to medium contractors who are well known for leveraging Sketchup for tender staging and have no expertise in a planning suite such as Bentleys Synchro Pro.

My issue is that I’m not a programmer by trade.

I’ve started digging into Ruby, but I’m realistic about the gap between a proof of concept and a robust, scalable extension (Image below is a start). So I’m reaching out to ask:

Where have you found skilled SketchUp Ruby developers for plugin work
Are there specific communities, forums, or marketplaces you’d recommend
Has anyone here collaborated on building commercial grade extensions, and what did that process look like? Any pitfalls I should be aware of early, particularly around architecture, performance, or SketchUp API limitations

Appreciate any insights, advice, or connections from those who’ve gone down this road.

Cheers,

J

Hi, there is Phases 4D, you may take a look.

Search into the extension warehouse for Skp4d Pro. I think it can help you.

I learned SketchUp Ruby API by reading a lot in this forum
