Feature request to not only applying ‘Show panels’ / ‘Hide panels’ by clicking on the screen icon.
That always requires you to “mouse over to the right of the screen” to claim the extra highly necessary screen space.
A (user selected) shortcut key assigned to toggle “Show / Hide panels” would be very useful.
While we are at it I would like a user selected toggle option to make the panels self collapsing after a given interval 5 seconds of non action?) or on touching back in the model space. Ideally it would be a toggle switch on each panel perhaps next to the information icon in the header. Example: I want the tags panel to stay open all the time like current behavior but if I open Model Info it is only to a just something and I would prefer that one close once i begin modeling or select a new tool to free up screen space. Just a thought.
I need to read that several times to grasp its potential. You may have some good points there.
The right side panels have always been an annoying space-claimer for me. Giving the user more options to controle its (their) visibility would make the web version even more appealing. I realy like the web version!
Interesting. So the idea is to set some panels to only open on hover (or perhaps close after some amount of inactivity time), and other panels set to always open (if they were already open, of course).
Exactly, perhaps a hover/sustain toggle header of each one. Different workflows require different pallets open frequently, but every workflow covets modeling space. In my case I admit I use the ipad app as more of a full featured viewer to carry around very large and complex models while onsite. I do sometimes model small things on the fly but for anything complex I return to Pro, so my use might be different. The Tags pallet I need open at all times but the rest I might infrequently need so I spend a lot of time opening one, adjusting something, then closing it so I can work again. it they were all slickly opening and closing on hover i might just leave them all minimized that would be cool. But I could see the ability to have auto-expanding or retracting pallets benefiting anyone, less clicks, more screen space. Thanks for listening.
I don’t have a specific workflow in mind in my case. My “use” of SketchUp is about very different small private projects and about thinking how it (SketchUp) could be made better without making it bulky. Less could be better.
In this case (side panels in/out) I think there’s a lot to gain. But once again, I have to chew on what you wrote and come up with some ideas/options that somehow would work for everyone.
I hope @tommy_acierno (hi Tommy) holds back on making fast changes final.
My other “use case” is to find answers to questions of other users. I’m not too good in finding answers to “why can’t I open my file?” And we see far too many of those lately.
Agree with you as usual. I alway advocate for any changes to be added user options only. Nothing worse than a forced UX/UI change that breaks a long held workflow.
(Hi Garrett - It’s good to connect with you again.)
Agreed. Changes (often) involve several iterations of intention and consideration with others before seeing the light of day. The timing is just really good…I have been thinking of ways to improve Panels for a bit.
Second :
Provide each icon with a user controllable flag: eather clollapse after (say) 5 seconds / or stay. Once an icon panel is open its visibility depends on what the flag is set to by the user. A little mark [5] or [-] in the panel header shows the flag setting (= 5 second or “permanent”)
Here for instance ‘Entity Info’, ‘Tags’ and ‘Scenes’ are set to stay (showing [-] in the panel header. But… (below!)
But… A user defined shortcut key overrides all flags (without changing their settings) and toggles visibility of all panels between: off / current settings
This needs to be incorporated by SketchUp? It takes a minute or two to create your own shortcut to display/hide panels. I created one years ago and assigned a button on my mouse to the shortcut. A click of the button with my thumb displays or hides the panels. I can’t imagine working without this. I use it constantly.
what about a pin attribute. pin it if you want it to stay, leave unpinned to minimize after finalizing use or after focus change. a timer to close could be a user defined variable added to the the unpinned panels close after focus change.
To be clear: this thread is about a SketchUp for Web feature request regarding the panels behavoir in that version, I expanded it slightly by asking for the same feature request to be considered for the ipad app as well, as they are similar interfaces. In both cases the implementation would need to come from the SketchUp devs.
Maybe I sounded more scolding than I intended. Nobody needs to apologize, I was just clarifying the ask, all good. It’s a great forum where so many knowledgeable people are engaged and genuinely care about helping.
