I don’t use any scene manager, but since version 2026, undo or redo scene and scene related updates/changes are possible (at opposite to earlier versions).
So, - I did not check it, but theoretically: if someone is using a version of “scene manager” written earlier than SU 2026 released, in SU2026, these extensions might fill up the undo stack with a lot of scene related operation, which may influence the model related usual undo-redo operations.
Yes, I’ve been dying for hierarchical scene management for ages. It’s such a basic need for improvement – to my mind more important than AI or ambient occlusion, but they add more wow than such a basic essential function.
Like dezmo, I don’t use any scene manager extensions but I’ve found in the last several years I’ve been able to greatly reduce the number of scenes I need for a project because there’s so much control in LayOut. Fewer scenes makes scene management in SketchUp much simpler for me.
Well, checked, as I assumed all changes made my Matrix “recorded” individually to undo stack. At the time of writing, it didn’t even occur to me that it would be there at all, but I mentioned it in the description of plugin how its behave related to undo.
Im not sure what scene management would do. I havent looked at any but it would be nice if the scene tabs didnt run off the right side of the window. Having them create a second row doesnt seem that tough. Also the ability to set what updates when doing a right click and update scene at the tab. I seldom want to update the camera as an example. I agree with @DaveR the ability to control the Layout viewports with out jumping to SU and then updating the scene was a huge thing.
I’ll explain you in other way.
If you use my Scene visibility plugin written for you, in SU2025 or earlier. Eg. “Hide on all scenes but current” this won’t be in the undo stack. You cant use undo to make it “unhappened”.
However in SU2026, after you use it, it will be recorded to undo’s, and if you push the undo button (or Ctrl+Z) it will undo that scenes related visibilities
This undo stack will be filled as much same command as much schenes you have.
As opposite in SU2025, where the undo button wont be usable to undo the scenes visibilities.
This is a breaking changes in Sketchup 2026 and Ruby API, and my plugins ( I guess others as well) does not prepared to handle this new behavior.
The plugin needs to be rewritten to make “batch changes” into one undo operation. I cant promise when can I do it…(Let me know, if you need it to change or not.)
I think I may not have explained what I meant by Scene Management very well. What I am looking for is a way to organize scenes into folders or a similar structure so that the number of open scene tabs is reduced and they don’t run off the edge of the screen. Not sure if that is possible or not?
There is currently no way to make the scene bar in Sketchup look different than the one the SU team created.
If you use a “Scene manager plugin” - which allows folders for scenes in separate own UI - the native scene bar can be hidden,
Thanks. It was based on requests I saw on the forum. It’s not on EW because a couple of things felt goofy, like a bad UX. But maybe it’s worth resuming. If it could be updated, do you like the SU ‘Panel’ look (as shown) or Modus (Bigger UI)? Or would a slimmed-down List View with groups do the trick? Is Tag Visibility required? Description? Other?
Not really sure how it would work James - in my minds eye I imagined a plugin that could Group Scenes like yours does, but still sit in a SketchUp tray but I guess that’s impossible? I think if it was a floating window it wouldn’t suit my minimalist UI layout but I could be wrong.
Also, I am mindful about what @dezmo mentioned about SketchUp 2026 although I am currently staying with 25.
That would be nice. But I think the tray/panel look is as close as we can get for now. Dezmo did -I think- show a way to get into the instructor panel. But that’s probably not what you’d want.
I’ll see about updating what I have with the idea of keeping it simple. I’ll toss it your way then
