SketchUp boasts to have more than 42+ million active users with 100 million + downloads a year, and Blender says they have 8+ million downloads a year. Both are their public statements. So not even close.
Not to discredit Blender, but the software is made for the use for very different users. Most instances that I see where SketchUp user (architects, interior designers, landscape designers) migrate to Blender is only for rendering purposes. Then they say goodbye Blender, when they find out Twinmotion is also free and 10x more simple
Surprised you have not jumped Adobe subscription and gone to Affinity ⌠Trimble going the Abode road too, after Autodesk gouging not going to get burnt again⌠so I am looking at alternatives this yearâŚhell presentations are easier in Powerpoint than LayoutâŚ
PS, better turn off my autorenew setting on my account so I dont get rolled into the subscription model by default
Count me as an Affinity convert. Still own Creative Cloud, but never use it. Photo and Design are great.
Even though I beta tested v1 of Photoshop, I feel Adobe asking for $60/month is ridiculous. Only the rich and corporations can afford it. FWIW, I went to discontinue my CC subscription, and they offered it to me for $25/mon. What!
Yeah, SU counts every page refresh on their web product a download.
A quick way to look at it is by the number of available tutorials for each platform. A quick Google search for âBlender tutorialâ yields 70M results. âSketchUp tutorialâ yields 16M. A huge disparity.
So, on one hand youâre saying there are over 100+ million downloads per year, then youâre telling me most downloads are by architects? LOL! Sorry, I donât believe it for a second.
And there are still many architects who use Blender to model and render their scenes. There are some really great architectural addons that come with Blender, and 3rd party ones are fantastic. The only thing missing is Layout-- which Iâve already addressed.
Twinmotion, free? You might want to check your facts:
I use Affinity Designer on one mac without Adobe CC to support SketchUp/Modo. I use Adobe CC on main workstations. Have used Photoshop and Illustrator from the beginning (1990). I do also work with InDesign, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom and other CC applications so even Adobe CC is expensive it gives me a good value.
And if you need Layout, then youâll have to export from Blender. Hereâs a video of using DXF to create a quick house model. One thing to note, unlike SketchUp, Blenderâs âsymbolsâ cut entirely through a solid wall.
Looks like that thread goes in the direction blender vs. sketchup.
IMVHO a usless discussion - here in germany we say in that case:
You compare apples to pears or these are 2 different pairs of shoes.
Just my two (worthless) euro-cent.
We would love to switch to Blender, unfortunately we are heavily reliant on 3rd party plugins (such as Enscape) for 360°s, VR standalone exports and the such.
The number was given excluding SketchUp Web, Free and Shop users.
Are you trolling or what?
If I made a software product called âMicrowaveâ and only had 1 user, I still would get 23M search results.
Search term âtutorialâ will give you mostly results in English. Even if you specify âBlender 2.8 totorialâ vs âSketchUp 2020 tutorialâ you would get a difference of 2M vs 6M results.
You can also argue that Blender users watch a lot more tutorial videos to get to a proficient level for their needs.
I donât disagree that you can use Blender well for ArchViz, there might even come a time where you could use it for CAD work, but itâs not even close to a standard tool for architects now. Most students will learn SketchUp, AutoCAD, Revit, Rhino, Grasshopper, 3ds Max, V-ray and Photoshop first, as they are the most demanded tools in the job market. Only then they would consider Blender for some interactive presentations or their freelance ArchViz work.
Didnât see an option to buy Twinmotion in the landing page, so didnât notice changes. Nice to see that the price is a lot cheaper, compared to Lumion.
So you believe people are searching for tutorials on how to make their favorite smoothie?
FWIW the software name is Blender.
So, if you search for âBlender 3D tutorialâ then you get over 19M. If you search for SketchUp 3D tutorial you get half of that. Still, not worth arguing over. I think we all know the trajectories of these two software products.
Trimble doesnât have a great record-- or even a decent record, of communicating what theyâre planning with their customers-- other than notices theyâre changing the pricing, again and again.
Blender, on the other hand is fully transparent with their future plans. In fact they release new features EVERY WEEK. And, when you install any new release version of Blender (happens 2 or 3 times a year), it asks if you want to copy all preferences, startup files and plugins from your older versionâand it does it automatically every time a new version comes out.
Blender does not compete as a full-on architecture CAD program. Still itâs accuracy is at least as good as SketchUpâs. And as Iâve said, Blender has no bill of materials or any sort of Layout capabilities. If those are requirements, then donât choose Blender.
And for the record, I donât consider SketchUp a true CAD program either as it approximates curved surfaces with polylines. FormZ is true CAD. Still, SU is good enough for most documentation purposes as long as you donât need to spec a fillet. Still, Iâm sure there are people out there still using Quark Express.
Is it possible to stop such sensless discussion please - its not a blender promotion thread.
For me is sketchup like driving a BMW and blender is like driving a mercedes - i could compare both cars due driving company cars - mercedes usability is a horror.
Yep, it is a sad day but I felt it was coming. Iâm on SUPro 2018 and always thought I was missing something looking at 2019 and 2020. I just could not see any justification in upgrading. I love SUPro and Layout. It has enhanced my career and reputation since 2006 but it has more and more felt like an old banger. I wonât subscribe as the idea sounds like a rip-off and apparently you can keep using your licence until your hardware or OSX outdates it. My Mac is still holding up after 7 years but Iâm thinking I may hold onto it when I replace it simply for SU (if possible). I think Trimble have just committed career suicide! Now to start looking for an alternate to SUPro and Layout. Canât they sell up to someone who actually loves the product and wants to get it to level pegging with rivals or even push it further ahead? I would happily pay more for a new licence then!!
