Problem with Importing dwg

Can anybody help with importing this file please?
J801-06 Proposed Barn (B) Plan and Elevations.dwg (47.5 KB)

hello,

there’s nothing in your dwg but 5 missing xref.
the one who sent it to you should bind the xref to the file so that it is not external anymore.
And since it is an export from archicad, ask him/her to export it as an .skp file instead of dwg

Hi Paul

Thanks for your response. I have now asked for the original Archicad (3ds) file as the .skp they sent didn’t have the level of detail the dwg file had.

I don’t have the level of understanding about xrefs etc but if I don’t have any success I’ll copy and paste your message on to the originator of the file.

Many thanks

xref are references. The main file (that you sent) calls 5 other .dwg files, 1 for each elevation and the ground floor plan. If I try to open this file, those xref are missing, and sketchup can’t handle them because they are external to the drawing.
If you have autocad and if they sent you those external drawings along the main one, simply type xref and hit enter, you’ll get the list of attachments.
right click on each of them and pick “bind” or “insert” to incorporate them in the file.

Another option is to import each elevation + the plan individually in sketchup, since you are going to rotate them differently anyway (still assuming they sent you those xrefs !!)

for info, here are the files you’re looking for :

3ds is not archicad file format, archicad files are .pln and if you don’t own it you won’t be able to do anything with it, and if the .skp export from their model was not detailed enough, I doubt the .3ds export will be any different

Following your response I’ve discovered a folder ‘Xrefed ARCHICAD Views’ that came with the DWG file that I was first sent! These successfully import into SketchUp as separate 2D plans and elevations as you mentioned which is what I was after. Many thanks for providing the expertise to get there.

AFAIK Archicad can be used as a viewer without a license.

Archicad can export directly to the SketchUp format from its 3D views. 2D items added to floor plans and sections won’t be expoerted, only the full 3D model. Archicad has no actual “level of detail” setting like Revit.

perhaps, but the idea here was to get material from it to work with inside sketchup

@WoodArc

you’re welcome ! glad you made it through
