Painting a graphic to a dome

I am creating a floating ball compass and am having difficulty projecting the ‘scale.png’ onto the surface of a dome. It works fine with a cylinder but not with the dome. Any suggestions please.

I’ve used the plugin Thrupaint as a part of FredoTools (Fredo6) for this:

You have to play with the tool until the texture is in the right position…
