Most of your frustration in this post stems from not taking advance of SketchUp’s 3D inferencing engine (so not only 2D). Give it some time and you’ll see that SketchUp isn’t a bad program but in fact very powerful, even with the few tools that it seem to have.
Most modeling (and editing) operations can be done with ease. Barry’s plugin, mentioned above, is when you need to repeat the same sequence of operations a lot. That’s also an advantage of SketchUp, being able to program in Ruby to tweak it to your own needs.

Seeing Box’s latest post, see how simple it appears to be to create your own “name” in 3D in SketchUp. There are other methods though.

so … still doesn’t show “how” you actually do it… holding buttons? clicking? what? plus you are doing at least 4 or 5 mouse movements and or clicks or what ever’s to do something in every other 3D program I’ve ever used is a single click and move…

ya, VERY frustrated… I have played with everything from Ray Dream Designer (if you know that program you are dating yourself as much as me :wink: ) to Maya, Carrara, some of the older Alias programs and a MESS of others including Blender, Cheetah … and I can go on… all of them I could at least construct a basic model in a few hours. Ketchup? going on days and I have yet to get a single thing done… not one. spend more time trying to figure out obscure controls and steps to get something every single other program has common sense controls for.

honestly the videos are causing more confusion… showing mouse movements, but are you hovering? clicking? control click? right click? option clicking? aghhhhhhh… I haven’t given up 100% yet (more because I can’t afford a proper CAD program) but it’s not going well. :confused:

It was just hovering over each midpoint and then moving the cursor until it snaps to the midpoint of the rectangle. Click to set the center of rotation and press Ctrl (Option on Mac) to invoke the copy function.

As I said, help is available if you want to learn. I’m getting the feeling you don’t really want to learn SketchUp.

If I didn’t want to learn the program, I wouldn’t have spent 6-8 hours a day for the last 3 days trying to figure it out… just loosing intrigue in it because it’s totally devoid of the basic 3D manipulations every other app has adopted. they were adopted because they work and make sense…

just to show basic frustration… since getting up this morning… this is what I have gotten accomplished… nothing!

OK, it’s probably something so stupidly simple i’m missing, but the tool has so many steps, I have to over think what I’m doing instead of it being a common sense, natural mouse clicking and movements…

Some hints:

  • you can lock the first inference with the shift key to find the second one easier
  • you should preselect the face if you want to rotate it
  • click at the rotation point to select it

Don’t get me wrong guys, I REALLY do appreciate the help!! not digging you but sometimes when you “know” something and go to explain … you miss a lot … I overly tore this apart to kinda explain that sometimes when you do a sample… it doesn’t always help :wink:

now this is simple… explains exactly what I did without a single word! plus it’s a rather common way to do a simple operation…

question 1: spacebar as shortcut for select tool, double click to select face and all connected edges

question 2: mouse right click menu

question 3: copy to clipboard (CTRL+C) and paste in place (my changed shortcut CTRL + V) to get a copy of the group at the same place

question 4: changed to the move tool with shortcut m (like in (m)move)

question 5: you can see the angle in the VCB in the right bottom corner

To make the rectangles rotate as desired, they first are selected with the Select tool - the black arrow cursor - then the user switches to the Rotate tool.

Back when the rectangle was deformed, the Rotate tool only worked on the edge so only the edge was rotated. You can tell what geometry will be affected by the tool by what all is highlighted. The tools will only work on highlighted (selected) stuff.

The default color for selected stuff is blue. In your video, note how edges and face were highlighted with blue as you move the Rotate tool over things. Only the edge rotated as the tool was positioned only over the edge (yes, there are times when you want this control.)

In Coty’s example, he first selected the rectangle with the Select tool (black arrow). R-click to open the context menu for the object selected (cursor over the context menu is the OS system cursor as it is a menu.)

There are several ways to select things. Single-, Double-, Triple-click. Single-click selects just one thing. Most things in these examples were double-clicked, which picked up the bounding edges.

Many tools have keyboard modifiers. When a tool is chosen, look down at the status bar for tips on the modifying options you have. Select + Ctrl produces the little plus sign indicating you can add stuff to the selection.

Well alright… I (sorta) got things figured out to at least get started here and have stuff starting to work… THANK YOU GUYS!!! seriously I would have given up a LONG time ago if it wont for your assistance…* (still think there is a LOT wrong withe interfacing set up of this program and the way you manipulate things, could be MUCH faster and WAY easier!, but anyway… )* one more quick question … how do I fill the back side up now? and keep the 2 holes? (gunna go search as usual so i may have figured it out by the time you respond… :wink:

  • redraw one edge (line tool)
  • intersect new face with two circles
  • delete two circle faces
  • correct all face orientations (whilte should be on the outside)

OK, i filled by just drawing a box at the bottom, the redrawing the circles matching the existing ones to make the knock out… wanted to export out to the printer to test one and make sure basically it’ll fit with my measurements… but… I have these white spaces I understand are “reversed or Inside” faces? and I’m guess that they are an issue as the thing is just basically 2 holes in nothing showing on the 3D printer interface… no box body parts. :confused:

For printing, your model must be solid (same as with all simpler 3D programs I think).
Your model:

  • has wrong face orientations
  • has inner elements

ya, get that… but how to fix… went around and did the “reverse faces” thing but that just made the whole item disappear in the printer and not import anything,… getting frustrated again… :confused: Wish one of my much simpler to use programs exported to STL here… if someone wants to play… again, i say the order of operations, the structure of the controls of this program are just so difficult to get straight… I know it can’t be just me… :frowning:Leg Mount base 1.skp (1.1 MB)

How long do you think you can ask a question about SketchUp in the same sentence with an offense against it?

I may be wrong about this, but looking at your screenshots I wonder if you are holding the Option key down while orbiting? All other 3D tools I’ve used do use Option-drag as a fast way to orbit, but in SketchUp there is an Orbit tool, and Option is used to suspend gravity. Orbiting without holding the Option key will try to keep the model looking upright, to reduce some confusion.

Or, you might have got to those angles with just the Orbit tool, in a way that I can’t reproduce!

I’m using offense, stating simple fact that easy of use of this program is FAR form the norm. again, I have used many dozens of programs over the years and none have confused me as much as this one, Blender being a close 2nd. The use of on conventional tools just makes it more difficult to learn. not having the simplest of basic alignment tools is just unreal… sorry… but I’m done. this program “seems” simple at 1st,… but it’s far from it. doing 6-10 steps to do what I can do in a cheap program like carrara or, geesh even things like Poser is just foolish… yes… I will bash the program that makes the simple functions unnecessarily complicated. I don’t give up easily, but, I’m done… 4 days now wasted to get a rather simple block drawn is just foolish… I could carve it out of a block of plastic faster.

You have some faces that are infinitely thin, and other faces that are on the inside lower down, and outside further up. It’s also only 34mm long, is that how small it really will be?
