Newbie coloring issues

Hello. I am a new Sketchup pro user, and the simplest things are giving me a headache. For example, I am trying to color an imported component which I have modified (size and shape), in a 2D plan. It seems very straightforward: select component, edit component, click on materials, select a color, and then click inside the component with the paint bucket. Except nothing happens when I do that. What am I doing wrong? I can’t seem to find the answer online, and yet it seems so basic and I feel stupid not knowing how to solve this. Similarly I have a lot of trouble when I try to make components or groups, or to explode: clicking inside the selected objects seems to give me the dropdown menu only 1 in 4 times approximately. Again I am aware these questions are all naive, but I would be very very grateful if somebody could help me with these issues. Online tutorials don’t seem to help. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hard to say for sure without seeing your model. It could be that you have a face style selected that doesn’t show materials.

You say you’ve modified the size of the components. If you did that with the Scale tool but didn’t correct the component definition, it could be that the material is being applied but doesn’t show because of your scaling. If you scale components instead of the geometry inside them, you must context click and choose Scale Definition to correct them.

Maybe you’re applying the material to the component “wrapper” instead of the faces inside and maybe the faces have already had materials applied to them. Materials on faces will always override materials applied to component and group containers.

Thanks a lot for your reply, Dave
I’ll go back and check all the points you mentioned. Hope it solves the issue! I’ll get back to you

If not, upload the .skp file so we can see what you have going on.
