Interesting to know that.
I’m not the only one here…
@slbaumgartner, in fact, I did not know that! As you just said, not as slick as a swipe would be, but it stops me having to look down to hit the ‘O’ key with my left hand (being right handed), then reposition my hand again to be able to toggle Shift for pan! Which makes it much more comfortable all of a sudden. Thanks for that!
@endlessfix I just wanted one thing, but efficiently!
But you got me thinking - can you actually give me an example of doing 3-4 things at once as I just can’t see what would that be (or why even)?
I get it, I like efficiency too
SketchUP can certainly be used with a trackpad, and I agree it would be nice if the Pro product had the same ability to orbit with a modifier key and multi finger gestures the way the Web product does, perhaps that will be something available in the future. I’m actually in the field for work for a while and often am using the trackpad as it’s simpler in the environment I’m in, but I still carry a three button mouse for serious work. At my office I also use a spacemouse which allows me to manipulate the orientation of the geometry and camera independently from the curser which is a game changer.
The biggest advantage to a mouse for me is the ability to zoom and orbit while another tool is active. So one can start and complete operations with any tool and move the camera to reveal other parts of the model simultaneously, and my fingers on my left hand are still free to apply modifier keys for the active tool or other shortcuts. This is all I mean about doing many things, I can start a edge for example and zoom out while orbiting to reveal a part of geometry offscreen and hitting the shortcut for x-ray at the same time so that I can complete the edge on some hidden far off point inside some other geometry. All this is possible with the trackpad as well, but I find it more cumbersome as many others do. I also find the mouse much more precise for working but perhaps that’s just preference. To each their own but I find the mouse faster.
Exactly what I wish for - I can do those things all at once with the trackpad in the web version. And I can be really accurate as I’ve got a large trackpad where I can click with my thumb in the corner, hold it down and freely move my index finger wherever I want and when it’s there, I release the thumb (instead of clicking with index, moving it held down and releasing it - that would be very very inaccurate and cumbersome). What I don’t get (as a professional software developer with 12+ years on the field) is why the years long argument as it probably would be a quick implementation to change the default and add another gesture? It would make many people very happy within a few hours effort?
Agreed. A good trackpad navigation system is a real necessity for SketchUp Pro. It’s disappointing that the SketchUp developers have not yet integrated it, especially given that it’s nearly 2024!
